Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 9, 1918.
Application filed November 18, 1915. Serial No. 62,234.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN V. GABON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Haverhill, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain Improvements in Apparatus for Use in the Manufacture of Boots and Shoes, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like reference characters on the drawings indicating like parts in the several figures.
This invention relates to apparatus for operating upon the heelsof boots and shoes and particularly to mechanism for trimming oif the portion of a top lift which proje'cts beyond the breast of a Louis heel.
In the manufacture of ladies shoes having Louis heels, the heel proper is frequently made of wood and covered, except as to the breast portion, with thin upper leather or with celluloid or other material of a color to correspond with the upper of the shoe.
The breast portion of a wood heel is usually covered by a fiap split from the grain face of the portion of the sole which extends over the heel seat. This flap or skiving is turned down and cemented to the breast face of the The object of the present invention is to provide a convenient and efiective apparatus for trimming off the projecting end of the top lift flush with the heel breast.
A feature of the invention consists in the combination of a cutting block, a knife supported for tipping movement about an axis extending longitudinally of the knife to allow the side face of the knife and the surface of the heelbreast to be held in contact, and means for eifecting relative movement of the knife and heel to cause the top lift to be trimmed in the plane of the breast;
As shown, the knife is adapted to pass transversely across the breast face of a heel above the top lift. Relative movement of the shoe" and knife longitudinally of the shoe will 'of the knife and preferably coincident with the knife edge. When the knife and block are moved relatively to efiect the trimming of the top lift the breast face of the heel will constitute a guide for the knife and the projecting portion of the top lift will be trimmed off in a plane which is a continuation of the plane of the adjacent portion of the heel breast, that is, the top lift will be trimmed flush with, the heel breast. The knife may, as shown, be mounted at one end for universal movement, and the universal mounting may comprise three axes, one axis being substantially parallel with the intersection of the breast face with the surface of the block to allow tipping movement of the knife and to enable it to be pressed flat against the breast, a second axis arranged at right angles to the first axis which second axis permits the knife to be operated to effect its cutting operation, and the third a vertical axis to provide for movement of the knife over different portions of the surface of the cutting block. Preferably the pivot about which the knife is operatedin trimming the top lift may be adjusted relatively to the cutting surface in the direction of the vertical axis of the knife for the purpose of bringing the knife edge into parallelism with the cutting surface to insure that the proj ecting portion of the top lift will be cleanly severed.
In the drawings,
Figure 1 is a perspective view representing the apparatus in use in trimming the top lift of a Louis heel; and
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a heel after being trimmed with the apparatus.
The apparatus comprises a cutting block 2' of wood or other suitable material. At one side of the block or on a projecting portion thereof is arranged the-mounting for the knife 4 which is operated by the handle 6. The mounting comprises a forked and threaded stud 8 which can turn in the block at right angles to each other. The cutting portion of the knife 4 is curved to conform to the usual contour of Louis heel breasts face of the heel.
just above the top lift. 2 I v In the use of the apparatus the shoeto be treated is placed upon a convenient por tion of the block 2 with thetreadface of the heel in contact With the block, The handle 6 is then' grajspe'd by the operator and the knife is swung about the axis: of the stud 8 .until the side face of'the knife engagesthe breast face of the heel above the top lift. The operator then holds the heel ivith one hand and With the other presses. the knifefag'ainst the breast If the pressure of the knife is greaterat one edge of. the knife than at the other, the knife will tip about the axis 16 and Will become parallel with the portion of the breast against Which it is pressed The operator noW moves the knife towardthe projecting breast portion of the top lift, the; knife tipping about the axis 16 to follow, the contourof the breast and finally engaging the top lift and tri ming off the projectingportion in a plane which is a continuation of the plane of the adjacent portion, of the breast. The knife is so adjusted by means of the threadedstud 8 that When the cut is finished the knife edge coincides with the surface of the block and clean cntting of thetop lift along'the 'edgenext the block is assured. The knife may. beswung ,over different portions of the block about the aXis 8 and thereby a be utilized.
Having thus described my invention, What -I claim as new and desire to secure b United States Letters'Patent is:
