a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Paper-Guard for Folding Mechanism, of which the following is a specification. V
This invention relates to the folding rolls forming a part of the folding mechanism used ordinarily on folders of web printing presses.
The principal objects of the invention are to'provide means for preventing any contact of the paper on the folding rolls and especially to prevent-the off one of the two rolls, that is the one toward which the paper is being carried by the cylinder, from engaging the edge of the incoming sheet so as to carry it down and thus wrinkle it.
The invention also involves improvements in details of construction as will appear hereinafter.

The invention is shown as applied to a folding mechanism comprising a folding cylinder 1, a cutting cylinder 2 and folding rolls 3 and 4. The folding cylinder is shown as provided with the usual folding blade 5 and paper forwarding pins 6.
As ordinarily constructed, the paper is carried around the folding cylinder until it reaches the position in which it is out. Then it is tucked into the nip of the folding rolls 3 and 4 by the folding blade. Then it is folded and forwarded by the folding rolls to the delivery guide 8. The rolls 3 and 4 run ordinarily at a much higher rate of speed than the cylinder 1. Ordinarily contact between the paper and the rolls 3 and 4: causes ofi'setand sometimes wrinkles. Moreover, roll 4 runs in a direction opposite to the direction of motion of the paper before it begins to be folded. Thus it sometimes strikes thepaper off the forwarding pins, particularly the outer sheet or sheets when a considerable number are folded at once.-
Then the edge of the incoming sheet strikes the roll 4 and goes between the rolls. It is to avoid these difliculties that this invention is made. 7
For this purpose a pair of stationary rods 10 are mounted parallel with the folding rolls and fixed to the frame of the machine. 011 these rods are fixed arms 11 which extend inwardly toward the rolls and project over them. These arms preferably extend into grooves 12 in the rolls which are provided to receive the forwarding pins 6. They are provided with convex upper surfaces which have 'a greater radius than that of the rolls so that these surfaces extend into a position to keep the paper from contact with the rolls. These arms are shown as arranged in pairs extending into each of the grooves 12. These arms thus constitute guards and a plurality of them may constitute the entire guard. However, I have shown them as supplemented by sheet metal plates 13 secured to the arms and partaking of the curvature thereof. Preferably, these are used but they may be dispensed with if desired. When used they are separated at their'ends over the grooves 12 to provide a space for the pins 6. The rolls 3 and 4 are shown as-fiuted.
The operation of the arrangement will be obvious. The guard located over the roll 1 is of particular importance because it prevents the incoming forward edge of the sheet from bending down and striking the roll 1 and thus being forced by the rotation of the roll into the bite. With this guard in position the incoming edge will strike it if it comes along in a low position. Then it is forced upwardly along it by the movement of the folding cylinder, thus restoring the paper to its proper position. Both guards also prevent off-set and wrinkling during the folding operation, by preventing the folding rolls having any contact with the paper other than what is required to perform the necessary folding operation.
