UNITED STATES JOHN L. DEMAREST, OF ELMIRA, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND PATENT OFFICE.
FBEDERIG W. SMITH, OF SAME PLAO IMPROVEMENT IN BOBBIN-WINDERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 127,155, dated May 28, 1872.
I JOHN L. DEMAREST, of the city of Elmira, county of Ghemun g, and State of NewYork, have invented certain Improvements in Sewing-Machine Bobbin-Winders, of which the following is a specification:
My invention is applicable to that class of sewing-machines which employ a flat bobbin.
Figure 1 is a partial side view of a sewing- Fig. 2 is an end' view of the same. Fig. 3 isa plan view of the same.
The bobbin A to be wound is placed, as is customary, on the spindle H of the sewingmachine, and the thread from the spool L, instead of being held by the fingers as the bobbin revolves, is passed around the tension B, and thence to the bobbin A. Now, on opera-ting the sewing-machine the thread will be wound up on the bobbin A (by the rotation of the shaft H) compactly and uniformly by the action of the tension B. This will continue until the bobbin A is filled, when the thread will override and slip over the edge of the bobbin, down upon the knife 0, and be instantly out off. To cause the threadto slip ofi upon the knife 0 with certainty when the bobbin is full, the tension B is placed a short distance to that side of the bobbin against which rests the knife 0. The knife 0 is curved toward the bobbin A to insure its catching the thread,
and by its elasticity accommodates itself to any variation in the position of the bobbin A on the spindle H. The knifeG might be placed above, below, or on either side of the bobbin, and can be hinged or otherwise arranged to allow of moving it aside when the bobbin is being changed should this be thought desirable. The tension B might be placed upon the top of the spool L, and the thread passed from the spool to the bobbin, at an angle, by means of a carrying loop or pulley placed at one side of the bobbin A, instead of the tension 13.
I claim as my invention-- 1. The adjustable tension 13 for tightening the thread as it is wound upon the bobbin A, when such tension is so placed that the thread passes from it or a carrying loop at an angle to the bobbin A, for the purpose specified.
2. The knife 0, combined with the bobbin A, for the purpose of cutting oif the thread when the bob bin is full, the whole arranged substantially as and for the purposes hereinbefore described.
J N O. L. DEMAREST.
