To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ISAAC NIEMI, a citizen of Finland, Russia, residing at Eben Junction, in the county of Alger and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rail-Ties, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in rail ties and one object is to produce a rail tie of durable construction. A further object is to produce a tie which will hold the ends of adjacent rails together without the use of fish plates. With the foregoing and other objects in view the invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter fully described in this specification, pointed out in the appended claim and illustrated in the accompanying drawings which form a part of said specification and in which Figure 1 is a top plan view of a portion of a railway right of way showing the application of my tie.

The tie consists of a hollow member 1, oblong in cross section and formed adjacent each end with oblique openings 2, the openings in each tie being spaced away from each other'a distance substantially equal to curved or beveled away from the opening 2 through part of the other side of the tie as at 6; part of this out being straight, however, as at 6. The cut l is continued with a combination straight and bevel cut, 7, 8 down one side of the tie opposite the straight out 5, and with a straight out 9 0p posite the cut 6, 6. The opposite sides of the tie are cut an equal depth thus forming ledges 10, 11 which serve as supports for the rail 12, the flanges of the rail projecting into the beveled cuts 6 and 8 of opening 2.
The ties laid beneath the meeting ends of rails are of somewhat different construction from the ties just described as they are formed of a blank of the shape shown in Fig. 10. This blank is formed with lateral lugs 13 which in making the tie are bent upward (see Fig. 7 to meet tongues 14: which are pressed out of the sides and top or tread of the tie. The tongues 14 and lugs 13 form a partition upon which the meeting ends of the rails 12 rest, the flanges of said rails being secured to said tongues 14 by bolts 15. A tie is placed beneath a rail in the usual manner only the trough made in the earth to receive the tie is wider than is ordinarily used in order to permit lateral movement of the tie (see Fig. 3) to permit it to be worked into engagement with the rail.
