Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 2, 1918.
Application filed-January 16, 1918. Serial No. 212,076.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN M. BURKE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Alma, in the county of Hill and State of Montana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Header Attachments for Binders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings,
and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in attachments to binders and consists essentially in the provision of an elevator apparatus for heading grain, and affording means for saving rgrain which otherwise could not be bound by the employment of the ordinary binder.
The invention comprises further various details of construction, combinations and arrangements of parts which will be hereinafter fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings and then specifically defined in the appended claim.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings which, with the figures of reference marked thereon, form a part o-E this specification and in which:
Figure 1 is a rear elevation showing the application of my elevator apparatus to a binder.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view through the elevator.
Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the elevator.
Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken on line 4-4 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 5 is an enlarged perspective View of :t yoke forming a part of the attachment, and
Fig. 6 is an enlarged detail view of one end of the elevator frame.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by numeral: y
1 designates the frame of an ordinary binder having an elevator 2 and having sprocket wheels 3, 4, 5, 6, v7, and 8, Vabout which the endless sprocket chain 9 passes and which forms means for driving the endless conveyers of the elevator attachment.
The elevator consists of a frame having two side pieces 10 of similar construction.
fand which are parallel to each other, the
lower end of one of the kside pieces being shown in detailed perspective view in Fig.
at right angles is securely fastened to the crossbeam 16 of the binder frame and which yoke has securely fastened thereto the bearings 13. A shaft 17 is journaled in said bearings and upon which the said sprocket wheel Y7 is keyed to lone end and a gear wheel 19 at its other end, each outside the yoke. and 20 designates a roller fixed upon the shaft intermediate the upright portions of the yoke and about which, an endless conveyer 21 travels, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings. Y
The conveyer frame has rollers 23 journaled therein `and over which the conveyei 21 travels, the adjacent ends of the endless conveyer being -connected together by straps 21X, as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings, affording convenient means whereby the conveyers may be detached when desired.l
The upper conveyer is designated by numeral 24 and passes about rollers 25 and 2G which are also journaled in the walls of the conveyer frame. A gear wheel 25X is fixed to the pintle end of the roller 25 and is in mesh with the gear wheel 19 upon the shaft 17 and affords meanswhereby the two conveyers may be driven in opposite directions. Guide boards 27 are mounted between the side walls of the conveyer frame and securely held in position by the bolts 28 which are passed through the elevator frame.
Rollers 29 are mounted in suitable bearings upon the lower edge of the 'elevator frame and form means for supporting the under portion of the elevator frame upon a wagon box', or other receptacle in which it is desired to deposit the grain as it is raised by the conveyers. A rod 30 shown clearly in Figs. 1 and 5 of the drawings is securely fastened through the medium of the pin 31 to the upper end of the yoke and its lower end has a strap 32 fastened thereto and which is adapted to pass about a cross rod 34 and to which the hook 36 of a pulley block 37 is keyed. A second pulley block 38 is fastened to the upper portion of the yoke and about which pulleys the rope 39 passes and which extends to a location convenient to the operator upon the binder frame, and affords means for raising and lowering the elevator frame to adapt the same to operate in different positions.
In order to guide the grain raised by the elevator 2 upon the binder, a plate or platforni 40 is secured to the frame of the elevater ,2 and bridges the space intermediate the latter and the lower portion of theelevator frame l0.
ln operation, the usual binding and tying` portions of the binder are lirst removed from the frame of the binder and the elevator frame attached in the manner shown in Fig. l of the drawings. rlhe sprocket chain 9, driven by gear connection .with the bull wheel, serves as means for driving the conveyers, causing the grain which has been headed to be elevated and dumped into a wagon or other receptacle provided for its reception. e
Through the medium of the pulley and tackle means the elevator frame may be raised and lowered to adapt the same to different heights of reeeptaclesinto which the grain is to be deposited.
l/Vhen it is desired to remove the elevator apparatus, it may be easily and quickly done by detaching the yoke and brace bar 30 and the usual binder head and tying apparatus may be replaced upon the binder frame.
l/Vhat I claim to be new is:
ln combination with the frame of a binder having` a horizontal cross piece, a yoke with angled ends fastened to said cross piece, bearino' blocks upon the upright portions of the yo ce, a shaft journaled in said bearings, a roller fixed to the shaft intermediate the upright portions of the yoke, and spaced apart a slight distance from the saine and said bearings, a conveyer frame having opposite side pieces, the lower ends of which are provided with notches adapted to engage the shaft intermediate the ends of said rollers and said bearings, shafts journaled. in the conveyer frame near its upper end, andv a shaft journaled in the conveyer frame near its lower end and above said notches, endless conveyers passing about one of said shafts near the upper end of the frame and about said roller, and detachable means for fastening the ends of the conveyer together', and a second conveyer passing over the other rollers, one at the upper and one at the lower end of the conveyer frame, geared mechanism for driving the conveyer, and means for raising and lowering` the conveyer frame.
ln testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN M. BURKE. Witnesses:
