PATENT OFFICE.
IMPROVEMENT IN FAUCETS.
Speciiication forming part of Letters Patent No. 127,128, dated May 21, 1872.
To all whom it may concer-n:
reference being had to the accompanying draw! ing and to the letters of reference marked thereon making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in a faucet having the valve placed at the inner end, and provided with a rod inside of the faucet, and operated by any suitable means, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figurel is a longitudinal vertical section of my faucet, and Fig. 2 is a view of the inner end of the same.
A represents the barrel of my faucet provided near the inner end on the outside with screw-threads to be screwed into the barrel or other vessel. In the inner end of the barrel A is forni'e'gl5 the valve-seat a with the valve B opening inward. The valve B is provided with projections b b, w,hich fit in corresponding grooves on the inside, of the barrel, as shown in Fig. 2, so that thevalve cannot turn in its seat but merely move out and in. A rod, C, is attached to the valve B in such a manner that it may turn, and, without any strain on the valve, in either direction. This rod passes through the barrel A, and has screw threads on its outer end, which work in a nut, d, formed in the outer end of the barrel, this end of the rod C being provided with a suitable handle, crank, or lever, D, the rod may be turned in either direction in the nut d, and be moved either out or in, thus closing or opening the valve. E is the spout, extending from near the outer end of the barrel A.
This faucet is ready for operation in cold weather aswell as in warm, for when the valve is shut there is no water in the faucet to freeze. The valve being placed at inlet of the faucet, and this end being applied to a cistern, barrel, &c., leaves the valve upon the inside of the cistern.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of the barrel A with valveseat a at the inner -Vend, the valve B, closing outwardly, with guide-projections b b, screwrod C, crank D, and spout E, all substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 2d day of March, 1872.
HARVEY G. WHITAKER.
