Be it known that I, ALFRED A. ZIEGLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of. Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Electromagnetic Circuit-Controllers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to automatic electro-magnetic circuit-controlling means for electric illuminating units, and is intended as an improvement upon the device of Letters Patent #1,173,239, granted to me February 29, 1916. The automatic circuit-controlling means of said patent involves the employment of a circuit-controller adapted for operation by an electro-magnet, said circuit-controller remaining in open position while one of the lamps of the unit is being used, which may be a long period of time, and then in closed position while the.
other lamp is being used and until such time as the first-named lamp has been replaced, which period of time may be of considerable length. As a result, the circuit-controller is caused to remain in closed position for a long period of time, whereupon its contact elements are liable to stick or become welded together.
One of the objects of the present invention is the provision of a rigid contact-plate having a depending contact lug disposed for engagement by the switch-arm, and arranged at right angles to the path of movement of the switch-arm with a view to 0bviate sticking of said members.
Also, in said patent the magnet for the circuit-controller is arranged horizontally and the stationary contact-member is supported on one leg of the core-piece and insulated therefrom. This structure is objectionable.
Therefore, another object of the invention is the provision of a frame arranged to support the magnet in vertical pos1t1on, which is adapted to be detachably connected with the base block adjacent the lamp-block, said frame having the stationary contactmember arranged thereon, but insulated therefrom, and the armature and moyable contact-member are made as separate pieces, attached together, and angularly related to each other, so that the movable contactmember is moved directly by the armature; and furthermore, improved adjustable means are provided for limiting the retractile movement of said armature.

The frame of my newly invented automatic circuit-controlling means comprises a base 40, upright side- portions 35 and 42, and a top-portion 47, said parts and portions being rigidly connected together to form a substantial rectangular and, in effect, onepiece structure which is, or may be composed of conducting material. The base 40 is extended at each end beyond the side-portions, the extension at each end being adapted to receive screws l5, by which the frame is detachably connected with the block E, and an extension at one end which is upturned to form an car 41, arranged in parallel relation with the side-portion 42.
The electro-magnet 36 is arranged on one leg of an inverted U-shaped core-piece 46. Said core-piece is attached at its crown to the under side of the top-portion of the frame, so that the electro-magnet is arranged in vertical position and supported by the frame, between its side-portions. The
poles of the magnet are disposed well above the base 0, to provide a space for the armature 37, a laminated armature is here shown having a beveled end for engagement with the conical end 44, of a stop screw 43, which extends through threaded holes in the car 41 and side-portion 42, said stop-screw being thereby adjustably supported.
The armature is pivotally supported by pivot-screws 48, which are extended through upright split ears 49, rising from the opposite side edges of the base 40. The movable contact-member of the circuit-controller is arranged on the arm, it being here shown as comprising two portions 38 and 52, the latter being made as an extension of the former. The portion 38, has at its lower end a laterally extended ear or foot which rests on the heel end of the armature, and is attached thereto by a screw 50, thus being rigidly attached to the armature, so that it is movable thereby. The portion 52 extends upward through a hole 53 in the topportion of the frame, and its extremity 62 is bent angularly to form an engaging-portion for engagement with the stationary contact-member. tached at one end to the screw 50, and at the other end to a screw 55, on the frame, to provide a permanentelectrical connection between the movable contact-member and the frame. Upon the top of the supporting conducting-frame a block 56 of insulating material is secured, and upon said block 56 a conductor plate 39 is secured Said plate has laterally extended cars at one end to receive binding-screw 57, for the circuit wires, the one leading to the coil of the electro-magnet, andthe other leading elsewhere-.- One end of said conductor-plate is extended beyond the end of the block, and has a downwardly extended lug 60, struck from it, and a platinum tip 61 is rigidly secured to the extremity of said lug, which platinum tip is disposed at a right angle with respect to the engaging portion 62, of the movable contact'member. Said platinum tip 61 extends substantially the entire width of the end of the lug 60-, and is arranged to present its edge to the enga ing portion 62 of the movable contact member. The provision of an edge contact secures reliable electrical connection between the two control members, and also provides for ample area of contact.
When the magnet coil is energized, and its armature attracted, the movable contactmember will be moved in a direction away from the tip 61, so that the circuit is open, and when said magnet-coil is deenergize'd and the armature retracted, the movable contact-member will be moved into engagement with the end of the tip 61, to close the circuit. The armature is moved into retracted position by gravity, although it is obvious that a retractile spring may be pro vided.
