WITNESSES INVENTOR magnetic switches o 'SWltCll member is prevented from moving mm) STAWENT OFFICE.
I FLOYD N; BARBER, OF GRAFTON, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR, ."BY MESNE ASSIGNMENTS,
' TO THE ELECTRIC CONTROLLER & MANUFACTURING COMPANY, A CORPORATION To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FLOYD N. BARBER; a citizen of the United States, residingat Grafton, .in the county of Allegheny and State of B'Pennsylvania, have invented new and use- :ful Improvements in Electric Switches, of
which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to electro-magnetic devices, and more articularly to electroi the type inwhich the to circuit-closing position as long as the -current through the energizing winding is above a certain value and moves to said position as soon as the said current is reduced to the saidvalue.
' Referring to the accompanying drawing the figure shows one form of my switch A in i'side elevation, a motor circuit being ,Zflshown diagrammatically. the drawing, N represents a base or support, preferably of slate or other insulating'material. On this base, I mount the framefA which supports the winding B, surrounding the vertical core with the poles aand'a'. On the pivot K -I pivot the armature, switch arm, or movable member G, having one end; within the field of; the magnet and magnetically controlledby the pole a. The other end of the member C is bent downwardly and terminates in I the contact E insulated from the remainder of the member (3,] "The pivot K" is between the ends otthe member 0; adjustable stop, for example, thescrew H, engages the underside of the member C at the right of the pivot 'K to limit the right hand movement of the said member and to adjust the air- 40 gapbetweenthe top of the magnet and=the left-hand end of the said member. -The adjustable spring G is attached to the member' G, to cause or assist the member" to return to the position shown after it has been rotated tothe left by the magnetic pull across the. gaps between the member 0 on one, side and the magnet frame and the pole a onthe'other side. The screw J in the 'member C regulates the air-gap existing between the pole at and the member 0, when the latter is attracted .to, the former. l
The-armature, switch arm, or movable I) oscillates on the, pivot L and has 11-8 other end within theinfluence of theipole orwhen enrgized. The member D carries Specification of Letters Patent.

between its ends the contact F insulated therefrom and adapted to engage with the contact E when the latter is in the position shown and when the member Disattracted to the pole at.
'VVhen the switch S is closed, current flows from the positive side of the, line through the switch S, the winding B, the resistance R and the motor M to the negative. The armature or movable member D will at once be drawn up by the magnet and preferably close the magnetic circuit between the pole at and the lower end of the frame A. The armature or movable member C may or may not be actuated at the same time. The pivot K is so located, the tension of the spring G is so re u'lated, and the air-gaps between the memfier C and the frame A and the pole a and between the member D and the frame A and the pole a,
are so adjusted by the -stop H, that the memthe contacts E and F, the member G will be actuated at the same time as the member D, whereby the contacts E and F will be kept separated. As the current dies down by reason of the increasing speed of the motor M, the current through the winding diminishes and when the current diminishes to such a value that the magnetic pull across the gaps between the member C and the magnet is overcome by the spring G or other bias, as gravity, or both, the member C will oscillate tothe right and the contact E will engage with the contact F, thereby short-circuiting the resistance R and causing an increased current to flow through the motor. The member G can be caused to be released at the desired value of current by adjustment of they screw J, or the tension of the sprihg'G.
I do not restrict my invention to the details and combinations shown or described as many changes, may be; made within the ed. to be moved by said winding with unequal facility, a contact on each arm, normally separated from each other, the said arms having portions attracted by the windingto maintainvthe'said contacts separated when both arms are moved by the Winding and to cause said contacts to engage eac'l'i bv the" other when winding."n
only one arm is moved winding, a pair of magnetizable a'rnis adaptlito be -mo vad. by said w nd ng with une/ aiifll aeil anall ap 7 a a. a 5 arms havingv portions attracted by thew ing to maintain said contacts separated when both arms are moved by the winding and to cause said contacts to engage each other when the current in the winding is reduced.
3. In a magnetically-operated device, a winding, a pair of magnetizable arms adapted to be moved by the winding with unequal facility, a contact carried by each arm, the contacts being separated before the winding is energized,and the said arms having portions attracted by the winding to maintain the contacts separated when botharms are moved by the winding, and to 2. In a magneticallyropera ted a.device, a-
ind x i one of the arms is moved by the winding;
and to cause the winding to move both arms when the current in the. winding is above a certain value and torelease one arm when the current reaches the said value.
"sh-1n a magnetically-operated device, a 'winding, a pair of magnetizable arms adapted to' be moved by the winding with ;unequal, facility a. contact carried by each arm, the contacts being separated before the winding is enargi /ied, and the said arms havins Pa ic e,"W d y; the i-i fl a to ,s ep.arated .v when (both ithe, and fto cause tlie contacts tofbe engagedlwhen only one of the arms is movdby the winding, and to cause the winding to move both arms when the current in the winding is above acertain value and to cause one of the arms to move its contact into engagement with the contact on the other arm when the said current is reduced to the said value.
