CHIMNEY-CAP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 2, 191%.,
Application filed January 2, 1917. Serial No. 140,114l.
or chimney with a protecting hood or cap which is so constructed and arranged that it will permit of the free outflow of fluids or gases therefrom, and at the same time prevent the entrance of air, rain or snow from without into the chimney or flue.
Further said invention has for its object to provide a chimney or flue with protecting means which are so arranged and constructed that the same will be automatically caused to protect the side from which the Wind is blowing, and in so doing expose the opposite side of the chimney or flue so as. to permit of the free egress of the gases from the flue.
Further said invention has for its object to provide a chimney or flue with a movable protecting hood or cap which is so mounted upon the upper end of the chimney or flue, that the same will be depressed upon the side from which the wind is blowing, and its 0pposite side be raised to permit of the free egress of gases from the chimney or flue.
Further said invention has for its object to provide a chimney or flue With a protecting hood or cap which will automatically adjust itself to close that side of the chimney or flue against which the wind is blowing, and which will automatically right itself to assume a normally horizontal position when the wind ceases.
To the attainment of the aforesaid ob-.
jects and ends my invention consists in the novel details of construction, and in the combination, connection and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, and then pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification wherein like numerals of reference indicate like parts Figure 1 is a side view showing the upper portion of a chimney or flue and a protecting hood or capconstructed according to, and embodying my said invention;
Fig. 2 is a central vertical section showing the protecting hood or cap tilted by the action of the wind, and 4 ig. 3 is an enlarged detail sectional View showing the means for maintaining the protecting hood or cap movably attached to its support.
Referring to said drawings 10 designates a chimney or flue which may berof any desired shape or form and constructed of any material desired. The said chimney or flue is herein shown as formed of metal, and
provided at its upperend with a support comprising a cylindrical section or collar 11 centrally arranged above the top of the chimney or flue and secured in position by means of a plurality of inclined rods 12, 12, vhaving their upper ends secured to the underside of said collar 11, and their lower ends secured to the upper end of the chimney. or flue lO. I v 3 ,v 1?) denotes a protecting hood or cap which is conical in shape, and may be provided along its Q edge with a depending rim or flange ;13"'.' Upon the under side of said hood or cap 12 is securedan annular member or dished plate 14: having a central, de-
pending flange or rim 15 adapted to be received by the collar 11 supported above the upper end of the chimney or flue. To aid in maintaining the hood or cap 13 properly in position upon its support, I preferably slightly round the upper portion of said rim or flange 15 at its point of junction with the dished plate 14.
16 denotes a post which is centrally dis-- posed below the collar 11, and supported upon a suitable support, such as a transverse bar 17 having its opposite ends se cured to the inclined rods. The upper end of said post 16 extends into said collar 11 and is provided with an eye 18. Upon the underside of the hood or cap 12 is centrally secured an eye 19, and 20 denotes a chain or other suitable connection having one end secured to said eye 19 on the under side of said hood or cap, and its other end connected to the eye 18 on the post 16, whereby to secure said hood or cap 18 against accidental separation from its support.
The operation of the device is as follows: Normally the hood or cap 13 will be sup ported in a horizontal position with the rim or flange 15 upon its under side located within the collar 11 supported upon the upper end of the chimney or flue 10. As
llll
soon as a current ofair coming from a y direction strikes the upper surfaceof the hood or cap 13 at one side thereof it will cause said side to be depressed more or less according to the force of the wind, andat the same time will cause the opposite side I from said chimney or flue;
'As soon'asthe wind subsides the hood or 7 cap .13 will automatically right itself, and
assume its normal horizontal position, and
"permit of the uninterrupted flow of fluid from all sides of the chimney or flue.
Having thus described my said invention,
what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent isz- 1. The combination with a chimney or flue of a protecting hood, a support'having its lower end secured to said flue and having a collar at its upper 'end, and means arranged upon the under side of said protecting hood and resting upon the upper end of said collar, said means comprising a portion received within said collar, whereby said protecting hood is tiltingly supported upon said support, substantiallyas specified.
2. The combination with a chimney or flue of a protecting hood, a support having its lower end secured to said flue and having a collar at its upper end, and a plate secured to the under side of said protecting hood and resting upon the upper end of said oollar, said plate being provided with a depending, annular fiange received within said collar, whereby said protecting hood is tiltingly supported upon said support, substantially as specified.
3. The combination with a chimney or flue of a protecting hood, a support having its lower end secured to said flue and having a collar at its upper end, means arranged .upon the under side of said protecting hood and resting upon the upper end of said collar, said means comprising a portion received within said collar, whereby said protecting hood is tiltingly supported upon said support, and means secured to said protecting hood and to said support and eX- tending through said collar to maintain said hood in operative relation with said support,
substantially as specified.
Signed at the city of New York, in the county and State of New York, this 12th day of June, one-thousand nine hundred and sixteen.
