Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Indy IwIfio Application filed 21' une 7, 1917. Serial No. 173,318.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES H. MINER, of Iaunberton, Mississippi, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Flange-Lubricators, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is designed to provide a flange oiler adapted to apply lubricant to the flange of a wheel while the train is moving and to assurethe proper feed of oil by the vibration of the wheel. To this end I have an oil supply with a valve controlling the feed of the oil therefrom, and this valve in turn is actuated through a bar which is supported in an inclined position having its end face against the wheel, and as this bar is oscillated by the moving flange it actuates the valve.
In the accompanying drawing, I have shown the invention in diagrammatic form sufliciently to illustrate the same. In this figure the wheel is shown at A, the flange at B, while the oil pipe leading from the oil reservoir is shown at C. I provide a controlling valve D for the flow of oil, and this is provided with a knife edge a at its lower end which bears upon the upper face of a bar 6, which is supported in an inclined position with its front face 0 in contact with the flange of the wheel. This bar, due to the irregularities of movement of the wheel Wlll be oscillated back and forth, the inclination being sufficient to return the bar by gravity against the flange, and this movement through the point aof the valve moves the valve back and forth in a corresponding manner and will alternately open and close the oil exit and thus allow a proper amount of lubricant to fail down through the orifice or oil exit overthe upper face of the bar 6 to the flange of the wheel.
The amount of movement of the wheel will automatically regulate the supply of lubricant.
What I claim is:
In a flange lubricator a bar supported in an inclined position with one end against the flange of the wheel, an oil supply and a vertically arranged valve controlling the oil supply and bearing on the inclined face of the bar, the oscillation of the bar actuating the valve, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof, I aflix my signature.
