citizen of the United States, residing at Coney,l in the county of Montgomery and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in llnclinorneters, of which the following is a specication..
This invention has relation to levels for aeroplanes, airships or the like, and has for an object to provide a device for the purpose of indicating the extent of inclination of the machine either longitudinally or laterally relative to the surface of the ground.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character embodying one or more indicating elements, pivotally mounted and Weighted so that one or the other may maintain at all times a vertlcal position irrespective of the inclination of pended claim.

With reference to the drawings, 10 and 11 indicate drums disposed in a vertical plane and at relative right angles. Both drums are supported upon a traine `which is indicated at 1&2. The frame 12 carries at one end a pair of upstanding arms 13, apertured at their upper ends to receive trunnions 14 which projects Yfrom the periphery of the drum 10 to pivotally support the same between the arms. ln order that the drum 10 may be retained at all times in an upv right position thetrunnions 14e are located slightly above a horizontal line taken diametrically through the drum.

Mounted centrally upon the drum 10 is a pointer 17 for pivotal movement, having the lower end weighted as at 18, and the upper end bent as at 19 to extend over the periphery of the drum.
A pivot 20 is supported upon the drum 1l centrally thereof whereby to support for rotation a pointer 21, having its lower end Weighted and its upper end bent over the upper edge of the drum 11 in the manner of the pointer 17.
lt will be noted that the drums 10 and 11 are mounted in a manner to permit oscil latein7 movement thereof in directions at right angles to each other.
The frame 12 is provided with an integrally formed depending bolt 22 which is adapted to extend through an elongated opening or slot 23 of one arm 2l of an angle bracket, the other arm 25 being apertured to permit the passage of bolts therethrough to secure the angle brackets to some stationary portion of the aeroplane. A thumb nut 26 applied to the bolt 22 serves to secure the frame in place subsequent to adjustment longitudinally of the bracket.
ln use, the device is mounted in an aeroplane in such a way as to dispose the drum l() transversely of the machine and the drum 11 longitudinally thereof. li will be apparent that when in flight the 'forward or rearward inclination of the machine will be indicated bv the pointer 12 which, being weighted to maintain a vertical pof-,ition will indiM cate upon the graduationsl of the drum 11 the extent et ,the inclination whether the drum is in a forward or rearward direction.
