Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 2, Tibia.
Application filed September 25, 1917. Serial lilo. 193,082.
To all whom it may concern:
{Be it. known that l, Nrnrron Hawnmsz, a subject. of the Emperor of Austria, residing at Tarentum, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Aeroplane-Protectors, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in aeroplane protectors.
The primary object is the provision of a protectlng means for air craft adapted to be carried thereby and being light in weight and not interfering with the operation of the craft.
A further object of the device is the proprotecting aeroplanes and dirigible airships from flying missiles such as bullets, the device being in the nature of a protective covering readily carried by the craft.
With these general objects in view and others that will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts. hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and then claimed.
in the drawing forming a art of this application. and in which 1i e designating characters refer to corresponding parts throughout the several views,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of an airship provided with the present device.
Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof and.
Fig. 3 is a central transverse sectional view of the same. I
Referring more in detail to the drawmg, a gas bag or balloon formedpf such material as rubber being readil inflated and herein shown elongated in orm.- A suitable covering 11 is provided for the bag 10,
preferably formed of canvas while propellers 12 are arranged at opposite sides thereof and a car or basket 13 is suspended therebeneath.
A suitable rudder 14 is provided at the stern of the craft and also a steadying plane 15 while storagemembers 16 are carried adjacent the car 13 which may be arranged with a propeller 17.
A bed of feathers 18 surrounds the lower half of the balloon 10 being packed closely against the canvas covering 11 and retained in position thereon by wire net work or gauze 19. The feathers 18 also preferably cover the car 13 as well as the storage members 16 or may be arranged only upon the bottoms thereof.
This mass of feathers are calculated to stop any oncoming bullets and thereby prevent the bullets from bag 10 or the car and its storage members when arranged thereon. The aerocraft may move over the enemies lines in case of war without fear of molestation from rifle bullets and with the occupants thereof'entirely protected. 7
What claim as new is 1. In combination with an aircraft having a gas bag, a bed of packed feathers sur rounding the lower half thereof and a wire retaining gauze overlying the feathers and secured to the bag,
2. A device of the class described comprising agas bag, a car depending therefrom, a canvas covering for the bag, a layer of matted feathers surrounding the lower portion of the bag in contact with the said covering and a retaining net carried by the covering and surroundin the feather layer.
in testimony whereof afix my signature.
