Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented @ll'uly 2, 191e To all whom it may concern:
Bc it known that l, CHARLES E. GODLEY, a citizen of the United States, and residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented a new and Improved Oil- Lamp Font Fastener, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to connecting mechanism adapted to secure the fonts and burners of oil lamps in proper position relative to the bodies or superstructures, and at the same time, substantially prevent the entrance of air in quantities sufficient to extinguish the llame at this point of connection. It also consists in forming both the body and the font with pairs of concentric cylindrical flanges, the outer flanges of the font and body being formed to interengage and lock, and the inner flanges of the font and body being formed with interengaging sealing portions, the inner flange on the font preferably extending to a height above the lower edge of the skirting of the burner mounted on the font.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is an elevation-section of my improved lamp. Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view of the spring that holds the burner down on the font. Fig. 3 is a plan of the burner. VUEig. 4 is an elevation showin@ the relative relations of the parts of the body or superstructure.

ln the drawings the body or superstructure of this lamp consists of a casing 1, a door 2 connected to the body by means of a hinge 3, a head 4 held down on the casing 1 by means of a chimney 5 and nut 6 as described in my former Patent Number 1,101,021, dated June 23rd, 1914, a lining 7, a font 8 and a burner 9. The head is provided with openings 10 through which the burnt gases may escape and with holes 11 through which freshair can enter and pass down between the casing and lining. The door may have a thumb-piece 12 by means of which it may be opened and closed.
This present invention has to do with the construction of the interengaging parts of the font and superstructure and with the parts ilnmediately adjacent thereto.
lllhe font 8 is united to a top 14 which has an external flange 15 provided with a verti cal notch or slot 16 and the bayonet slots 17 that .are adapted te receive the pins le ser ried by the annular Hangs 19 on the body 1. Within and concentric with this flange 15 is an annular plate 21 having a guard flange 22, and having an internal flange 23 beaded over the inner edge of the top 14 to unite the parts. The burner 9 has an IL shaped flange, one leg 24 of which is horizontally disposed and having a plurality of air holes 25, the other leg 26 of said base Hange depending from the outer edge of said horizontal leg below the upper edge of' said guard flange 22.
The body 1 is formed with a depending annular flange 19, within which is secured a sealing ring substantially U shaped in cross section, one leg 27 of the ring being secured to the flange 19 and the other leg constituting a flange 2S that engages the guard flange 22, and thus prevents air from passing through the bayonet slots 17 into the body of the lamp,
Secured to the lining 7 is an annular plate 29 having downwardly extending resilient lingers 30 that engage the horizontally dis posed leg 24 of the lL shaped flange on the burner and holds the burner seated on the font. The edge of the lining may extend beyond the inner edge of' the plate 29 andl be formed with teeth 32 that extend in close proximity to the burner, as indicated in Fig. 2. The flange 19 is cut away at 33 to permit the wick shaft 34 to move with the font. A washer 35 of leather may be employed to form a tight joint between the font and burner.
The font 8 is usually made of a sheet of soft ductile metal, pressed to the form shown in Eig. 1. The edge of the font is left of sufficient size to loosely receive the top 14, sometimes called the neck of the font, which has previously been formed with' a circumferential groove into which said edge may extend. The top and font are then placed between proper dies and pressure is applied to these dies, causing the upper part of the font to be reduced in diameter, and the edge of the font to be forced into the circumferential groove at the base of the flange 15. This securely unites the font to its top. The joint is then completed to make it oil-tight by soldering.
When the font is secured to the case 1, the slots 16 and 17 will be substantially completely covered by means of the flange 19 so that all air necessary for combustion must come down around the chimney I3 and the lining 7. This passage conducts a sufficient amountv of; air tothe burner to properly sustain combustion, but it prevents sudden gusts of air which are especially liable to occur where such a lamp is mounted on an automobile traveling at high speed.
' The details and proportions of this construction may all be changed by skilled designers without departing from the spirit of my inyention.
I claim:-
1. In af lamp, a superstructure, an annular flange' on the lower portion of said super-- structure,an oil receptacle, an annular flange carried by the upper portion of the said receptacle, locking means to secure one of said flanges within the'other, a burner mounted on the oil receptacle, means mounted on the superstructure to hold'the burner in position, a depending sealing flange separate and apart from the burner mounted on the superstructure, and a second sealing ange projecting 'up from the oil receptacle into engagementv with the sealing flange on the superstrilcture.
2l In aglamp, the combination of a body andan oil font, a pair of telescoping locking flanges, one'mounted on the body and the otherl on the font',a pair of telescoping sealing flanges, one connected to the body and the other to the font, a burner on the font separate from but within said flanges, and means to'hold the burner in position.
3. In a lamp, the combination of a body and a lining therefor, an oil font, a pair of telescoping flanges for securing the font to the body, one of the flanges extending down from the body and the other extending up fromtlie font, a pair of sealing flanges, one sliding within the other, one mounted on the body and the other secured to the font, a burner mounted on the font, separate from but within said flanges, and resilient means mounted'on the lining to hold the burner in position. 4; In a lamp, the combination of a body and a lining therefor, an oil font, a pair of telescopingflanges for securing the font to the bodygone'of the flanges extending down from the body and the other extending up from the font, a pair of telescoping sealing flanges, one mounted on the body and the other on the font, a burner mounted on the font, andan annularplate secured to said lining and having downwardly extending resilient fingers engaging said burner to iold' the same in position on the font.
5.k In a lamp, the combination of a body and an oil font, a cylindrical flange extending up from the font andhaving bayonet slots, two concentric cylindrical flanges eX- tending down from the body, a series of pins radially mounted in the outer of said flanges A, on-the'bodyiandadapted to enter the bayonet slots to secure the font to the body, a burner mounted on the font, resilient means cal'- ried by thc-body to hold the burner in position, said burner embodying a downwardly extending flange, and a second cylindrical fla-nge mounted on the font concentric with and within the inner flange on the body and extending upwardly above the bottom of the flange on the burner.
6. In a lamp, the combination of a body and an oil font, a cylindrical flange and a flat ring forming the top of the font, said flange being formed with a circumferential groove intermediate its ends into which the upper edge of the font extends, a cylindrical flange extending down from the body and telescoping with the flange on the font, means to secure the font to the body, a burner mounted on the font, and means to hold the burner in position. 7. In an oil burning lamp, a superstructure, an annular flange on the lower portion of said superstructure, rigidly arranged pins carried by said flange, an oil receptacle, an annular flange carried by the upper portion of said said receptacle formed with bayonet slots arranged to coperate with the pins on said first named flange to secure the oil receptacle to the superstructure, said slots having inclined portions beginning at the up per edge of the flange and circumferential portions at the lower ends of the inclined portions, thi ends of the horizontal portions farthest from the inclined portions being enlarged upwardly to hold the pins carried by the flange on the superstructure, and resilient means mounted on the superstructure and engaging the oil receptacle to hold the pins in the enlarged portions at the ends of said slots.
8. In an oil burning lamp, a superstructure, an annular flange on the lower portion of said superstructure, an oil receptacle, an annular flange carried by the upper portion of said receptacle, said flanges being concentric" and one of said flanges being formed with bayonet slots, pins mounted on the other flange to coperate with said bayonet slots to secnrethe oil receptacle to the superstructure, said slots having inclined portions beginning at the upper edge of the flange and circumferential portions at the lower ends of the inclined portions, the ends ol the horizontal portions farthest from the inclined portions being `enlarged upwardly to hold the pins carried by the flange on the superstructure, and resilient means mounted on the superstructure and engaging the oil receptacle to hold the pins in the eiilarged portions at the ends of said slots. l
9. In a lamp, the combination of a body and a lining therefor, an oil font, means to secure the font to the body, a burner mounted on the font, and an annular plate secured .to said lining and having downwardly eximonse tending resilient ngers engaging said garner to hold the same in position on the 'ont 10. In an oil burning lamp, a superstruc- 5 ture, a lining therefor, an oil receptacle, eoneentrie telescoping flanges carried by the superstructure and oil receptacle, means to secure the oil receptacle to the superstructure, a burner structure operatively carried 10 by said receptacle, and a series of resilient fingers mounted on the lining of the superstructure and engaging the burner to hold the burner in position.
11. lln an oil lamp, a superstructure, a lining therefor, an -oil receptacle, means to secure the oil receptacle to the superstructure, a burner operatively carried by said receptaole, a ring secured to the lining of the superstructure eo-axial with the burner, and resilient fingers extending down from said ring and engaging the burner to hold the same in operative position on the receptacle.
