Description

I. W. GlLLETTE. VALVE FOR TRAIN PIPES. APPLlCATION FILED an. 2. 191a.
Patefited June 25, 1918 1M. Gillefie ISAAC W. GILLETTE, OF LEWISTON', IDAHO.
VALVE FOR TRAIN-PIPES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 25, 1918.
Application filed February 2, 1918. Serial No. 215,127.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Isaac W. GIILETI'E, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lewiston, in the county of Nez Perce and State of Idaho, have invented new and useful Improvements in Valves for Train- Pipes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to valves for train pipes, and the object is to provide a valve including a casing formed in two sections each being provided with a valve plug, and each of said plugs controlling an air duct, one of these ducts operating the signal, and the other constituting an air connection for the brakes.
A further object is to provide a. two-part casing, each part or section being provided with a suitable inlet and outlet, and with a valve plug, these plugs being so connected that they may be operated simultaneously and by a single handle or controlling device.
A still further object is to provide in a device of the type indicated means for resiliently retaining one or more of the operating elements, and means for preventin the leakage of air between the sections 0 the casings.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arran ement of elements hereinafter describe and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is a view in side elevation,
Fig. 2 is a view in vertical section,
Fig. 3 is a detached view showing the plug members in perspective.
The casing for the valve comprises a plurality of sections designated, respectively, 10 and 12 and are each provided with an outlet for connection with a hose, one of these outlets being designated 11 and the other being designated 13. The hose connections are shown at 14 and 15. The inlet for section 10 is designated 17 and that for section 12, 18. Valves are shown at 19 and 20, dilzhese valves being employed when dosire Copies of this patent may be obtained. for
I provide for controlling the outlets 11 and 13 by the operation of a plurality of valve members through the medium of a single handle designated 22, this handle being mounted on one end of the tapered plug 23 provided with a port 24 controlling the outlet 11. A plug 25 is carried by the lower section 12 of the casing and is provided with a port 26 controlling the outlet 13.
A socket portion of rectangular cross section is shown at 27 and receives one end of the tapered plug 25, this end having a corresponding cross section, and provides for the rotation, or partial rotation, of plug 25 when the other of said plugs is rotated. The ports being similarly located, the air brake connection and signal pipe connection are opened at the same time.
A gasket 30 is located between the sections of the valve casing and a spring 32 located as shown serves to retain the adjacent elements in proper position under slight pressure. A spring 25' retains plug 25 properly seated, and it will be noted that while the plugs are rotatable together and are locked with reference to rotary movement, they are held to seat independently, so that greater tension can be provided in connection with the larger plug.
What is claimed is:
In a device of the class described, a twopart valve casing each part being provided with a tapered bore, the reduced end of one of the bores being adjacent to the enlarged end of the other of said bores, each of said parts being provided with inlets and outlets, a valve p ug for each part of the casing, the plugs being provided with ports, and one of said plugs telescoping into the enlarged end of the other of the plugs and being rotatable with said plug last named, and means for operating said plugs simultaneously and independent resilient devices for holding each of the plugs to its seat.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
ISAAC W. GILLETTE.
