SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 613,600, dated November 1, 1898.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, J OSEPH PLANT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Minneapolis, county of Hennepin, State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Valved Unions, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates in general to steamvalves used principally in the'distribution to of steam through heating systems in buildings; and the object of the invention is to provide a combined valve and union to be used for connecting the ends of heating-pipes, whether arranged in line or at an angle, and
for controlling the passage of steam and water through the same; and afurther object is to provide a valve within the union which will serve both as a Valve and a gasket and will offer but a slight obstruction to the paszo sage of steam and water through the pipes.
The invention consists generally in various constructions and combinations, all as hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claims. 7
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of a combined valve and union embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a section of a modification of the valve and union. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line mm of Fig.2. Fig. 4 is a plan view of the check-valve.
In the drawings, 2 represents the sleeve or ring forming the connection between the op- 5 posite ends of the union, and 3 and 4 are the ends of the union, between which is arranged the valve proper. The ring 2 is provided at one end with an inwardly-proj ecting annular flange 5 to engage the outwardly-projecting o flange 6, provided at the inner end of the part 3, and the outer ends of the parts 3 and 4 are interiorly threaded to receive the threaded ends of the pipes 7 and 8. The opposite end of the ring 2 from the flange 5 is interiorly threaded to receive the exteriorly-threaded end of the part 4, and the walls of the parts 3 and 4 are swelled or bulged outwardly to form a casing or shell for the valve hereinafter described.
Between the parts 3 and 4 of the union and within the ring or sleeve 2 I provide a disk 9, which fits snugly within the ring and forms Y a gasket between the ends or opposite parts of the union, as well as a seat for the rotating valve. Through the middle portion of the 5 5 disk or gasket 9 I provide a series of ports or openings 10, and in the surface of said disk, at the outer edge of the ports 10, I provide an annular recess 11, forminga seat for the valve 12, which is pivotally secured to the cross-bar 6o 12 bya bolt 13 or in any other suitable way. The valve 12 when rotated is adapted to close the ports 10 and prevent the passage of steam or water through the union. The disk 9 is also provided with the outwardly-projecting flange or rim 14, which is recessed upon one side to receive a stop or lug 15, secured to the surface of the valve 12, and serves to limit the travel of the valve in either direction. Upon the opposite side of the valve 12 from the stop 15 I provide a slot 16 to receive the inner end of an operating arm or lever 17, which is curved inwardly toward the middle of the valve and then outwardly and terminates in a shank or stem 18, which passes through a stuffing-box 19, arranged in the walls of the part 4, and is provided at the innor end of the stuffing-box with a collar 21 and at the outer end with a lever 22, by means of which the shank may be rotated to operate the valve.
In Fig. 2 I have shown a modification in a construction of the end sections of the union which consists in providing a straight passage Within the part 4, leading from the valve 8 5 to the pipe connected to the outer end of said part to permit the device to be used in acontinuous straightway pipe, and I have also shown a modification in the means for operating the valve which consists in a short arm 23, engaging at its inner end the slot 16 in the valve 12 and at its outer end secured to the shank 24, which projects through a stuifing-box 25 and is provided upon its outer end with a handle 26. I have also shown in this figure another valve-seat provided upon the opposite side of the disk 9 from the valve 12. This seat consists of a flanged extension 27,
projecting outwardly toward the pipe 7 and forming an inclined surface to receive a check valve 28, pivotally connected at its center to an arm 29, that is in turn pivotally supported by the lugs 30, arranged upon the inner walls of the part 3. I prefer to use this construction where it is desired to prevent back pressure in the heating-pipes or to prevent an undue pressure of steam upon the under surface of the valve 12.
As heretofore described, the disk or gasket 9 fits closely within the sleeve 2 and when the parts of the union are joined together forms a tight joint between the parts 3 and 4 and the sleeve. This disk may, however, be readily removed at any time to clean the valves or resurface the seat of either the valve 12 or the check-valve 28.
The device may be used wherever it is desired to connect the ends of adjoining pipes in a heating system, whether the pipes are straightway or at an angle to each other, and when arranged at an angle by using the form shown in Fig. l I am able to do away with the use of an elbow .in addition to a valve and at the same time provide a coinparatively unobstructed passage-wa y through the union.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A combined valve and union, comprisin g end parts, a valve disk and seat between the same, a valve, means for operating the same, a sleeve or ring inclosing said disk and connecting said end parts, and a check-Valve arranged within one of said end parts, substantially as described.
2. In a device of the class described, the combination, with the casing orshell comprising the end parts, and the sleeve or ring connecting the same, of the valve-disk arranged within said shell or casing, and provided with a port or opening, the rotating valve for closing the same, said valve being provided with a slot or opening, an arm to engage the same, and means connected with said arm and projecting through the wall of said casing, for operating said valve, substantially as described.
8. In a device of the class described, the combination, with the ends of the union, of the valve-disk arranged between the same, and provided with ports or openings, a rotating valve, means for operating the same, a check-valve, seats for said valve provided upon opposite sides of said disk and a sleeve or ring inclosing said disk and valves and connecting said end parts, substantially as described.
