THIMBLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented J une 25, 1918.
Application filed July 10, 1917. Serial No. 179,745.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, SOPHIA CoLnUnN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fort lVorth, in the county of Tarrant and State of Texas, have invented new and use ful Improvements in Thimbles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to thimbles and comprehends especially the provision of a thimble having a thread cutting attachment.
Another object of the invention is to provide a thimble of common construction hav ing an opening in one side thereof near the mouth of the thimble in which is secured the shank of a cutting blade.
The invention also aims to generally improve combined thimbles and thread cutters to render them more practical, useful and commercially desirable.
With these and other objects in view as will become more apparent as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter fully described, illustrated and claimed.
In the drawings,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my combined thimble and thread cutter.
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the article.
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view through the cutting member and thimble.
Fig. 4 is a horizontal sectional view on the plane of line 4.4t of Fig. 3, and
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the cutting element.
Referring in detail to the drawings by numerals, 1 designates a thimble of common construction having secured thereto my improved thread cutter 2 which comprises a cutting blade preferably of blue steel having its sides beveled to form an inner cutting edge 3 opposed to the body of the thimble. The free end of the cutting blade is rounded as at 4 and the other end is formed integrally With a shank 5 extending at right angles thereto through an opening 6 in the body of the thimble. The shank is enlarged at its inner end. to form a head 7, which bears against the inner side of the thimble body and which has its outer faces curved in con formity with the curvature of the thimble. The opening 6 is surrounded with an outwardly projecting flange 8 which closely on gages the shank of the cutting blade, thereby reinforcing the securenlent of the cutter to the thimble. The close engagement of the shank 5 with the walls of the opening 6, of the head 7 with the inner face of the thim ble, and of the flanges S with the shank of the thimble may be depended upon to hold the cutter in position but if a more rigid attachment is desired soldering may be resorted to.
The cutter when secured to the thimble adjacent the open end thereof as shown is in a convenient position for use and the cutting edge which is spaced a slight distance from the exterior surface of the thimble is in a measure guarded so as not to injure the user and may be quickly engaged with a thread to sever the same.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it will be apparent that I have provided a very practical, useful and much needed combination article which is superior to those of similar nature used heretofore.
While I have shown and described the preferred embodiments of my invention it will be clearly understood that I do not wish to be limited to this construction but may make such changes as will fall within the scope and spirit of the invention as claimed.
WVhat I claim is:
The combination with a thimble having an opening in its side wall and a cutting member having a shank, of flanges on each side of said opening and a head on the shank having curved faces engaging with the inner Wall of the thimble, said shank engaging said flanges.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
SOPHIA COLBURN.
