Specication of Letters Patent.
Patented .l une 25, ibid.
Application filed December 18, 1915. Serial No. 67,542.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, ANNA L. SKILLMAN, a
citizen of the United States, residing at This invention relates to improvements in l paper fasteners.
The -principal object of the invention is to provide a paper fastener or clip which is simple and cheap in construction and which is effective in operation.
Another object is to provide a device of this character which is not only useful as a means of holding a number of papers together but will be ornamental, as well.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is an elevation of my improved paper fastener in operative position;
Fig. 2 is a vertical section on the line 2-2 of Fig. l; and
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the fastener.
Referring particularly to the accompanying drawing, the paper clip is formed of a single piece of flat metal l0, cut into the form of a horseshoe, as shown. This strip of metal is cut intermediate its edges on a line extending from the point 11, which is adjacent one of the ends of the metal, to a point monica or thin patent may be obtained for ve cents caen, by addressing the 12, adjacent the other end. Thus there are formed two concentrically arranged and curved or bowed portions kadapted to be slightly separated to receive the edges of a number of papers therebetween to be held thereby. The metal may be of any desired size or thickness, but when the same is made of metal it is preferable that it be resilient to permit of the parts springing back into normal iat position after having been removed from the papers. This resiliency will also serve to urge the bowed portions clampingly against the papers.
If desired, the device may be made of celluloid with colored designs or suitable wording, such as Mottoes, so that the device can be used as a book-mark. In this use of the device it would be preferable to make the device considerably longer than when it is used as an ordinary paper clip, thus permitting the device to be inserted a considerable distance within the book.
What is claimed is:
A paper clip, comprising a horse -shoe shaped blank terminating in a pair of freely extending spaced lingers, said blank having an arcuate slot subdividing its body into two concentric arcuate sections bendable at their bases and on the long axis of the blank, said slot terminating short of the bases of said lingers at such a suitable distance only as to preserve the unity of the blank.
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
ANNA LOUISE SKILLMAN.
Witnesses:
SAMUEL P. SUTPHEN, LILLIAN S. KonHLER.
