HENRY STORJOI-IANN, OF GARWIN, IOWA.
I-IOG-OILER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 18, 1918.
Application filed July 17, 1917. Serial No. 181,021.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY SToRJoHANN, a subject of Germany, but have declared my intention of becoming a citizen of the United States, residin at Gal-win, in the county of Tama and gtate of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hog-Oilers, of which the followin is a specification.
y invention relates to an improvement in hog-oilers, and appertains more particularly to a structure having two rollers exposing a large surface.
An object of the invention is to provide a hog-oiler which is readily operated by the animal, and in which the rollers used turn in one direction only. A further object of the invention is to provide a trough in which the oil is received, which permits of the utilization of a small amount of oil as compared with the surface of the oiling-rolls. Further objects and advantages will appear in the specification and be pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of the specification Figure 1 is an end view of my oiler;
Fig. 2 is a vertical cross-section; and
Fig. 3 is a top plan view, with the cover removed.
The numeral 1 is a metal base, preferably shaped somewhat like the letter W, and bent to form two troughs 2 and 3. End- pieces 4, 4, are provided, in which are journaled the axles 6, 6, of the rollers 7 and 8. These rollers are fluted longitudinally and are adapted to extend down an appreciable dis tance into the troughs 2 and 3. The sides of the trough 1 are slightly resilient, and
have aflixcd thereto pawls 9 and 10 which bear against the sides of the rollers 7 and 8 respectively, and engage the sides of the longitudinal ribs 11 formed on the surfaces of the rolls.
It will be seen that the hog rubbing vertically against the rollers will cause an upward movement thereof, which will bring the surface, which has been immersed in the oil in the troughs, against the sides and back of the animal. As the hog rubs against the oiler, it is permitted to rotate upwardly, but is prevented from reverse movement because of the stops 9 and 10, which act as pawls on the rollers, the longitudinal flutings 11 acting as ratchets for the pawls.
I also preferably provide a roof for the oiler which comprlses an extensible upri ht 12 carrying the sheet-metal cover 13. he cover is provided for the purpose of preventing access of rain to the troughs.
The invention which I have made is simple, does not expose any surface for the hog to rub upon except the rollers, is simple of construction, and can be produced at a mini mum of cost.
I claim:
A hog oiler comprising a base bent to form two troughs, end plates secured thereto, fluted rollers journaled in the end. plates, pawls formin extensions for the outer ends of the base p ate which engage the flutings of the rollers to prevent their reverse movement, a cover and an extensible upright extending from the central partition between the two troughs to the cover for detachably and adjustably holding the latter.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
HENRY STORJOI-IANN.
