improved construction which may be readily applied or removed fromany ordinary Ipencil now on the market.
c Another object in view. is top rovide a Sharpener having a securin means at .one die opposite` end whereby vthe same may be .inountedon the end of a pencil when not in use,A andwhenin i. use may be removed and used substantially 2q in4 the ordinary mannerA ,ofv Sharpeners.
A still further object ofthe invention is 'in'. to provide a Sharpener formed with a body I or casing in two .parts and 4one or more cut- .tingblades held in place thereby in such a manner as to cut substantially in al spiral when in use. A f
In the accompanying drawing:
.. Figure-1. is aside view of anL embodimentv of the invention, same being shown on a= pencil with the pencil in use.
Fig. 2 is a side View showing the sharpener acting on a pencil for sharpening same. ,3
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal vertical section, on an enlarged scale, of the Sharpener shown in Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view through Fig. 3 on line 4 4.
Fig. 5 is a perspective View showing the frame and knife in a slightly spaced relationship, while illustrating the particular construction and the way the parts are assembled.
Fig. 6 is a sectional view similar to Fig. 3, but showing a slightly modified form of the invention.
Fig. 7 is a transverse sectional view through Fig. 6 on line 7-7.
Fig. 8 is a view similar to Fig. 5, but showing the modified structure disclosed in Fi 6.
leferring to the accompanying drawing by numerals, 1 indicates an ordinary pencil held by the hand 2 so as to write on the paper 3 in the usual manner. On the upper end of pencil 1 is a Sharpener 4 provided with W or clamping member 5, said A. CoNovER,
a citizen of the United States, and alcresi-V dent of Newburgh, in the county of Orange- A and State of New'York have invented: a` new and Improved Pencil-Sharpenen-off which the Yfollowing is afull, clear, and exact Application led November 13, 1917. Serial No. 201,877.

The section 11 is cut away at 19 in this form of the invention so as to allowv the discharge of the shavings. The edges of the blades 17 and 18 as well as the edge of blade 13 is preferably somewhat curved or spiral, though substantially any shaped edge may n be used without departing from the spirit of the invention. The curving of the edges of the blades is intended to give the same a shearing action rather than a scraping action whereby there will be a cleaner cutting of the wood on the pencil and a better sharpening of the lead. By forming the parts comparatively small and connecting same with the clamping section 7 the sharpener is always convenient and may be used at any time, while not being in the way, either in the pocket or while the device is in use.
