To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, AUGUST A. WALL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Terminal Clamp for Coil-WVinding Machines, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to armature coil winding machines, and its object is to provide an improved device to permit the attendant of the machine to quickly, with one single movement, clamp the wires in position without injury to the wires and without possibility of any one wire slipping during the operation of forming the coil; also to permit an instant release of the wires. By the use of the device the leads of coil are left perfectly straight and even so that the subsequent work of putting on tubing and of turning the leads is made much easier.
In order to produce the desired result, use is made of a clamping block provided with an abutment for the rear side of a wire to rest against, and a clamping lever fulcrumed on the said block and provided on its fulcrum with an eccentric cam disposed opposite the said abutment, the lever being provided with a holding down plate projecting beyond the cam and adapted to pass over the top of the wires to hold the same down on the block.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.

The clamping block 10 of the clamping device is provided with a flange 11 fastened by bolts 12 to a part 13 of an armature coil winding machine of usual construction. To the rear of the block 10 is secured an abutment 15 by screws 16, and this abutment 15 has its upper portion t? extending above the top of the block 10. The upper portion 17 is concave and roughened, as plainly indicated in Fig. 6, and in this concave roughened portion fits the rear side of the rearmost wire of the series of wires 18 to be clamped in place one alongside the other, as plainly indicated in the drawings.
The block 10 is provided with a vertically disposed pivot 20 on which is mounted to swing a clamping lever 21 provided at its fulcrum end with an eccentric cam 22 adapted to engage the outer side of the front wire 18 so as to force the wires one against the other and the rearmost wire against the ortion 17 of the abutment 15. The face 0 the eccentric cam 22 is made concave so as to snugly fit the outer side of the front wire 18. The fulcrum end of the clamping lever 21 is further provided with an integral holding down plate 25 projecting beyond the face of the eccentric cam 22, and this holding down plate 25 is adapted to overlie the wires 18 so as to hold the same firmly down against the back of the block 10. The forward side 26 of the holding down plate 25 is beveled to gradually press the wires downward onto the block when swinging the lever 21 from open into closed position. It is understood that when the clamping lever 21 is in open position, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 1, then the wire 18 can be readily placed in position on top of the block 10 and then the clamping lever 21 is swung into closed position so that the cam 22 gradually presses the wires 18 transversely one against the other and the rearmost into the concave top portion 17 of the abutment 15. During this closing movement of the lever 21 the beveled side 26 of the holding down plate 25 gradually engages the wires 18 and presses the same downward against the top of the block 10 thus holding the wires firmly clamped in position on the block and with the wires arranged one alongside the other. The holdingdown plate 25 is sufficiently long to project onto or overlie the top of the abutment 15 when the lever 21 is in closed position so that there is no possibility of the wires 18 moving out of place during the time the clamping lever is in closed position. It will be noticed that the clamping lever can be readily swung into open position to permit of receiving the wires 18 whenever it is desired t do so.

A Wire clamp for coil Winding machines, comprising a block provided with means whereby it may be secured to a support and'with an abutment having a concave roughened face for the reception of the rear side of a Wire, and a clamping lever pivoted on the said block and provided with an eccentric cam'having a concave face and disposed opposite the said abutment to clamp the Wireor Wires in place between the abutment and the'eccentriccam, the clamping lever having a holding doivn plate projecting beyond the cam and adapted'to' overlie the clamped portions of the wire or'Wires to hold the sameagainst the block.
