IGNITION .I'PARA'IUS FOR USE WITH INTERNAL-COMBUSTION EI\l'GrI'.l\l"EiS.YV
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Juin@ it, llgll.
Application led June 12. 1916. Serial'No. 103,138.
To mil whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, SIDNEY JAMES IVIL- Lmu's, a subject of the IInited Kingdom ot Great Britain and Ireland, residing at No.
83 vAbingdon Villas, Kensington, in the county of London, England, have invented new and useful Improvements in or Relating to Ignition Apparatus for Ilse with Internal-Combustion Engines. of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to ignition apparatus for use with internal combustion engines and is particularly applicable tor use,
. with motor cars.
The object of the invention is to avoid the use ot a magneto-generator; to increase the efficiency ot' the motor-starter; and to reduce the cost ot mamitacture.
According to my invention I use a non` trembler coil with a contact breaker, a yhigh tension distributer and two condensers, to take the place, of the magneto-generator and in order to enable an internal combustion engine to be started I use a trembler in parallelv with the non-trembler induction coil. Between the earth lines ot the nontremblerl coil and the trembler I introduce ,an additional earth line. tor the purpose ot t cou'ipleiing a circuit at starting through the two primary windings ol the trembler and non-trembler coil. in spite ot' the t'act that the contact-breaker may be open. so that iminediately a stud. or button. on the additional earth line. is depressed and the circuit completed, sparking takes place in the cylinder and continues until the stud is rcleased, when the trembler is cut out ot circuit. which is completed through the nontren'iblercoil and the contact breaker operated i'roin the valve shal't.
In the accomjmnying drawings is illustrated a method oi' carrying the invention into practical eii'ect.
is the battery. or other source of electric energy. It' is the low tension or primary coil l'or operating the trembler coil. being the non-trembler. I) is the condenser used in conjunction with the trembler coil Il. D is the, condenser used in conjunction with they non-trembler coil (l. Fisthe trembler and l*V the bridge for same, operating in conjunction with the coil Il and the non-treinbler coil (l. I is the contact breaker operated from 'the valve shaft, or other suitable part ot the engine. A dist ributer It, operated in asimilar manner to the. contact breaker I. connect-s the source of electric energy with the sparking plugs, each in the order in which it is desired the spark should take place. L is the push button to enable the additional earth line M to be brought into operation when it is desired to start the engine.
The modus operandi is as follows lVhen the button L is depressed the current from the batter-yA passes through the primary windings of the coil B and the trembler mechanism F. It", causing the current to How through both the trembler and non-trembler coils C although the Contact breaker I. which is ope ated trom the valve shaft, may be open. One end of the primary winding ot' each coil is connected in parallel at It" to the bridge piece. The additional earth line M having the push button L is connected across the earth of the coil B and non-trembler coils C when the push button is depressed.
It' it be required to start the engine, although the Contact breaker circuits be open, by depressing the push button Il the circuit is connected to earth through the additional earth lino M, enabling the current to pass from the coil I3 and non-trembler coil C to earth, thereby inducing the required current in the secondary windings of the non-trembler coil (l. The button Il may then be released and the non-trembler coil C will come into operation through the contact breaker I, enabling thc correct sparking to take place in the cylinders. l
lly the use ot apparatus as above the cost ot' construction is considerably reduced; the starting ot the engine may be effected without the necessity ot' using the ordinary starting gear; and the eiliciency of the ignition device is increased, augmented induction arising in the non-trembler coil C as a consequence ot the additional iron in the same field produced by the core in the, primary coil Ii.
l claimtl. An ignition apparatus for internal combustion engines, comprising a source ot' electric energy, a trembler. a primary coil in parallol with a non-trembler coil. a high tension distributer, two cmidensers one connected to the primary coil and one to the non-trembler coil, a contact breaker connected to the valve shaft. in combination with an additional earth lint` between the earth lines ol the two coils, and a depression titl Bti:
adapte 11o be energized by current from said Source, a transformer the primary eoil of which' is in parallel with the vibrator actuating coilfrwo earth lines one leading from the transformer primary coil and the other from the vibrator actuating coil, a distributer interposed in the earth lineI of the transformer primary coil, two eoni densers one connected. to the vibrator actu'- ating coll and the other connected to the transformer primary coil.y a contact lnealrer Vfor opening,` and closing' the circuit. through the vibrator aetuatingi` coil and adapted to be operated by a movingA part ol the murine. a normally open additional earth liml lictzween the tuo earth linerl tiratuuntioiud and a manuallyY operable circuit lowing device for cloaing' tl f additional earth line at will, substantially as described.
ln testimony whereof i have signed my name to thi` sl'iecilication in the presence ot two subscribing witnesses.
