Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed January 5, 1917. Serial No. 140,702.
'1 b all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, JOHN SoHoBnRT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Duluth, in the county of St. Louis and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Window-Hangers, of which I do hereby declare the following to be a specification.
My invention relates to window hangers and has for its object the provision of a combined hanger and lock of simple construction which may be conveniently operated. While it may be used for other purposes, it is especially designed for hanging storm windows which are swung .from the top and open outward at the bottom. Such windows are put up and taken down from time to time and the screws work loose. On the other hand if windows are hung on unguarded hooks, a gust of wind occasionally lifts a window off the hook, resulting sometimes in painful or serious accident to people in the vicinity as well as damage to property.
My invention consists of the constructions, combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1, is a front elevation of my said invention, Fig. 2, is an end elevation thereof, and Fig. 3, is a side elevation of one form of implement for operating a locking device, forming part of my invention, where said device is beyond reach of the operators hand.
In the drawings, 1 is a plate of any suitable construction attached to the upper rail 2 of a window, which plate has an aperture 1 formed therein. Secured to the building 3, above the window opening therein, is a plate t having a hook 4* formed on or attached thereto. Pivotally mounted on said plate 4 at a point above said hook, as at P is a button 5, preferably of segmental form and havin a peripheral groove 5 formed therein. aid button is spaced a suitable distance above the inward end of said hook to permit of the intervention of the upper end of said plate 1 between the periphery of Said button is provided with an operating handle 5 at one side which is preferably projected through an aperture provided in said button. If desired said handle may be omitted. A stop 5 (preferably only an outward swelling of the plate 4) is formed on or secured to said plate 4, to limit the movement of said button 5. While I have de scribed only one plate attached to the window rail and one to the building, it is obvious that as many of my said hangers may be used for hanging one window as may be suitable and desired, it being preferred usually to use one such hanger near one upper corner of the window, and one near the opposite upper corner thereof. "When the button 5 is too high to be conveniently reached by hand, it is preferably moved to retracted or to operative position by means of a pole 6 provided with a suitable eye 6 for engaging said handle.
In operatlon, the button is retracted as shown in broken lines Fig. 1 and the plate 4: is then engaged with the hook 4;, after which the button is moved to operative position to prevent the disengagement of said plate 1 from said hook.
at I claim is A sash hanger comprising a plate adapted to be secured in operative position to the front of a window sash, a plate adapted to be secured in operative position to the front of a window frame, one of said plates having an eye formed therein, the other of said plates having a hook formed thereon adapted in operative position to engage said eye, a locking member mounted on said other of said plates and adapted in operative position to obstruct the passage between the point of said hook and the plate upon which it is formed, said locking member being adapted to move in a plane parallel with the front face of such window sash, said look ing member being adapted in operative position to prevent the disengagement of said hook and eye and in retracted posi tion to permit of the engagement and disengagement thereof, said plate having a stop formed thereon adapted to engage said locking member in retracted position, said locking member being adapted to be retained against said stop by gravity.
In testimony whereof, I hereunto afix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
