Application filed December 15 11916. fierial .lt'o. 137,1d9r. 1
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that T, ARTHUR Unmn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Minden, in the county of Kearney, State of Nebraska, have invented a new and useful Staple Extractor or Fuller; and T do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and .use the same This invention relates to a new and useful staple extractor or puller and an object of the invention is to provide a simple, eficient and practical tool of this kind having means whereby a staple may be easily and quickly extracted. v 1
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of this kind in which 1mproved features of construction are involved.
@ne of the features of construction 18 to terminating in "a handle, the other end shaped to form a lateralloop; the free extremity of which constitutes a prong so tapered to a point as to enable the pointto be driven under a staple by the blows from a hammer or the like, so that when the handle is moved downwardly the staple may be extracted.
lBy inserting or driving the free extremity of the loop partially under the staple, the
staple maybe partly drawn, when moving the handle downwardly, then by further 1nserting the tapered part or prong of the loop and moving the handle in the opposlte d1- rection, the staple maybe further extracted.
dtl
Fi1rther,.that by the provision of a tool of this kind, the lateral loop thereof may be disposed in enga ement under and through the staple (aftert e same has been extracted a certain distance) in order that a further pull maybe imparted,- whereby the staple may be finally extracted.
, In practical fields, the details of construction may necessitate alterations falling within the scope of what is claimed.
The invention comprises further features and combination of parts, as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings and claimed.
' In the drawings Figure 1 is a view in perspective of the improved staple extractor, showing the ap? plication of the same, that is, illustrating how an initial pull is imparted to the staple.
Fig. 2 is a view in side elevation, illustrating how the final pull may be imparted to completely extract the staple.
Referring more especially to the drawings, 1 designates an elongated tool shank consisting of a cylindrical part 2 and a part 3 rectangular in cross section The end of the part 3'mergesinto a curved portion 4;,
Specification of letters Patent. Patented r1! nine Th, llgllfi m which extends at an obtuse angle to the shank. This portion a merges into a substantially semi-circular curved portion 5,
which terminates in a tapering sharp pointed hook or prong 6, which extends nearly in .parallehsmv with that portion of the tool between the curved portions 4 and 5 of the lateral loop 7. This prong'or hook curves slightlv in a direction fromvthe end of the rectangular portion- 3, so' that said hook may obtain a grip under the arch head ,8 of the staple 9 when extracting the same. ft is to be noted that the hook or prong 6 extends in a plane atsuch an angle to the tool shank that whenthe hook or rong is in engagement with the staple to e extracted, a'
post or the like, as shown in Fig. 1-, the shank may extend laterally and slightly upwardly,
whereby upon a downward pull of the handle, the staple maybe partially extracted. The prong or hook may thenbe further inserted, so that by another pulldown :3
wardly, or a pull upwardly, may further extract the staple. Then by inverting the tool to permit the loop 7 to be inserted under the arch of the staple and between its sides,
the staple-may be finally withdrawn from the post or the like, as shown in Fig. 2. It is to benoted that the prong or hook 6 is so bulged that the loop and the extremity of the prong will'engage the surface from which the staple projects.
The invention having been set forth, what is claimed as new and useful, is:-
In a staple extractor, a tool shank, sub-' rectangustantially one half its length being &
sai reclar in cross section, one end 0 tangular portion terminating side of the loop adjacent t in aloop, the e shank being substantially at an obtuse angle to the tool rat shank, the other side of the loop tapering into a curved prong curved outwardly and in a direction from the side which is at an obtuse angle to the tool shank and adapted to engage under the crotch'of the staple to give it an initial pull, the Ijouter op osite faces of the sides of the loop'being su stantially parallelism and constituting be lltlb llld ings,'one to engagethe crotch of a staple, In testimony whereof I have signed my the other engaging the face of a member. name to this specification in the presence of 4 gilto whiizh' the staple is (iilrivenl; whereibyba, two subscribing Witnesses.
al n me e exerte on t e stap e y 5 means of said loop, the terminal of the prong ARTHUR OLINE' constitutes means on which the extractor Witnesses:
