Specification of Letters Patent.
AUTOMOBILE ATTACHMENT.
Application filed May 1, 1915. Serial No. 25,350..
In all whom it may concern: 7
Be it knoyvn that I, Casm W. OBERT, a citizen of the United States of America, and resident of the borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and. useful Improvements in Automobile Attachments, of which the following, is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in and relating to automobile attachments, and particularly an improved timer-elevator and supplementary oil-filler, to be placed on such automobiles "of fixed construction as the Ford. In such cars as at present 1 constructed and placed on'the market, the timer is placedvinsuch position withrespect to the engine that it-is not easily and;quickly= accessibleg" being located at the baseof the cran lrflcasezbehind theradiator; where oil is very-often'spattered over it and the wires len'dingt'from it (causing troublesome short= circuits), and the timer is repaired and clcaiimi-withi great difiiculty. Where timerelcvaitorsy ortimer-brackets (so called) are a lied toremedy these troubles, it has been found impossible to so arrange them as not to interfere withth'e oil-filling device on the clef case rand in such combination, it isdiiiicult ordmpossible to fill the crank-case with oil witliout wasting of the oil on the engine iid earq l It E'san set of "the present invention, giergforeitaiprovidesuch an improved come 1 LP i 'y bracketr ihai both the oil-filler and timer are in a conveniently accessible position, so that the engine may be oiled," even in the dark, with ease and without danger of the oil running over and spattering, and the timer may easily and quickly be repaired and cleaned. A further oby'ect is to provide such a device which is simp e and economical in construction, and which can be quickly and securely attached to theabove type of car.
With these and other objects in view, my
, invention comprises the novel features, ar-
arts hererangement an combination of reference inafter more fully described wit to the accompanying drawings, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings,
Figure 1 is a view in elevation of my invention applied to an internal combustion engine V Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail 'view thereof;

' Fig. 4' is a view in elevation of-a further modified form of constructionu- Similar reference characters, in'dicate' con-w responding parts throughoutathe. several news. 1;; rm v.
Referring to the drawings, and more-para ticularly to Fig. 1 thereof; aninternal com-J.
bustion engine 10 is provided for a front: cover plate 11 of the crankcase, on which is arranged an oil-filler 12,-and the bevel 1 gears 13 and 14 connected tothe cami shaft for actuating the timer, -as iswell known.
In the present construction of thisztype of engine, the timer, is supported on the gear casing 18 shown in Fi L attached to the cover pi and bolts 16 passing throughextensions 19 ln'svhichcasing is to by means of nuts and 20. With this construction the 'oil fillen' 3' is made inconvenient of access, and-it is' an object of the present invention, -there--- fore, to rovide means wherebyan extension or supp ementary oil-filler mayf loo-provided on the present oil-filler; For this purpose, the gear casing 18 has, in o'ne ernbodiment" of my invention, projecting;upvvardlyt-liereing member 22,- which tenninatsjna hollow oil-filling extension or' sup lement ry oil-" therefrom and provided sauna-imaged cap of the supporting memliei QQ daSt'iiitegi'aF therewith, and provided hj ith 'a' hole 26; ea
tending therethrough a'ndiiraiinement with the bevel gear 14. A. shoulder 27 provided on the projection 25, and the tuner 28 is supported thereon, which is actuated by means of a shaft 29 extending through the opening 26, and secured to the said bevel gear 14. It will be seen that with this construction a very conveniently placed oil filler is rovided, and by. means of the bracket, t e timer issupported in an easily accessible position. y
In the form of construction shown in 3, a supplementary oil-filler 30 is pro vi ed having a bin ed cap 31 and a downwardly-extendin fl ange 32 adapted to fit within the oiller 12, and having lugs or cars 33 which are secured to the oil-filler by means of a bolt assin through a hole supplementary oil-filler, cast integral therewith, and provided with an opening 35 extending therethrough, and in alinemcnt withthe gear 14. This projection serves as a bracket for the timer 28 and shoulder 27, which are supported thereon and connected to the gear 1-1 by means of the shaft 29 extending through the opening 35 in a manner similar to that described with reference to Fig. 1.
In the form shown in F ig. 4, the construction is similar to that shown in Figs. land 2, with the exception that the supplementary oil-filler is not made integral with the timerelevator bracket, but is made to swivel so as to be readily accessible. A ring36 is provided at one side, integral with the projection 25, and is adapted to support the supplementary oil filler 37 over the oil-filler 12. The supplementar oil-filler 37 is provided with a downwar y pro'ecting flange 38, which is ada ted to be tted into the oilfiller 12, an adapted to be engaged by screws 39 engaging a groove 40 therein, to permit the supplementary oil-filler to be swiveled, but such as to prevent the oil-filler to be removed, without removing the screws.
It will thus be seen that the supplementar oil-filler provides convenient access for filling it with oil and for otherwise manipulating it, and at the same time is suitably held in position by the elevated timerbracket. By offsetting the oil-filler, the timer-bracket may be constructed in the most advanta eous form. Hitherto, it was necessary to uild the timer-bracket quite high to enable the oil-filler to be manipulated. The ofl'set feature of the supple= mentary oil-filler enables the filling to take lace, without buildingthe timer-bracket as liigh as heretofore. By the improved combined timer and oil-filler bracket, a ver compact structure results, with special a ,vantages attendant-such combination. By 'the swiveling of the supplementar oil-filler, the additional advantages are 0 tained in that while the funnel may be brought into convenient filling position at will, it may also be swiveled around to one side so as not to interfere with the access to the valve -mechanism of the motor, to which free access is desirable in rinding valves.
I have illustrated preferred and satisfactory forms of my invention, but it is obvious that changes may be made therein within the spirit and scope thereof, as defined in the appended claims.
I claim 1. In a device of the character described the combination of a motor casing, a gear casing supported in the motor casin and having an upwardly extending uplex bracket forked in opposite directions, an elevated timer supported at its lower part by said gear casing and in" its upper part by one branch of said fork, and an elevated ofiset oil filler connected with the other branch of said fork.
2. A device of the character described comprising a gear easing having an upward extension provided with a lateral projection constitutingan elevated timer support and a lateral projection constituting a supplemental oil filler support, and a supplemental oil filler adapted to turn in said oil filler support.
3. A device of the character described comprisinga gear casing having an'upward extension provided with a lateral projection constituting an elevated timer support and a lateral projection constituting a supplemental oil filler support, and an offset supplemental oil filler havinga curved neck adapted to turn in said oil filler su port.
In testimony that I claim the oregoing as my invention, I have signed my name in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
, GASIN W. OBERT.
