BENCH-BRACKET.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known .that I, IVALTER I. KIRK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvementin Bench-Brackets, of which the following is afull, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the" accompanying drawings, forming a Part of this Specification. w My invention relates-to bench'brackets, and especially to bench brackets for use in connection with piano benches or the like.

Anbbje'ct of the invention is to provide a practical and eflicient construction of bench bracket.

Another object ofthe invention is to simplify the device as much as possible, facilitating its attachment and operation, andreducing its cost of manufacture.

Another object of the invention is to insure the device operating successfully to support the member to be supported, as for example, the bench cover, but at the same time to relieve the connecting members for connecting or attaching the device to the bench from all strain or pressure from the supported cover.

In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a perspective view of a piano bench provided with a bench bracket embodying my invention;

Fig. 2 is a perspective View of one corner of the bench showing the interior thereof and the bench bracket applied to the same; and

Fig. 3 is an edge view of the device.

In the drawings I show a piano bench 1, having four legs 2- 2, and a hinged cover 3. This bench is provided with two bench brackets 4 embodying my present invention. Each of these bench brackets 4. is provided with a shank 5 which is adapted to be secured to one of the walls 6 of the bench 1, as best .shown in Fig. 2. This attachment is by a pivotal connection, as by a screw 7, so as to permit said bracket 4 to be swung up and down, as for example as shown by dotted and full lines in said Fig. 2. In the down position indicated by dotted lines, the bracket is located within the bench so that the cover 3 may be swung down to rest upon the side and rear member of said bench, closing the box formed by the upper portion of the same. bracket 4 is swung up to the position shown in full lines. in Fig. 2 the body portion 4 of said bracket extends up vertically from the cross or side member 8 of the bench, the lower end of the body portion 4 resting firmly upon the top ofth'e member 8. The co ver.3 then rests upon theupper end of the portion l and'is supported by the'same, it being understood that as a preferred arrangement there are two such brackets4 on the bench, one at each, rear corner ofthe same, as shownin Fig. 1. Thus the cover3 is' adequately and firmly: supported, the weight being taken direct y by the-portions l ofthe two brackets and communicated directly. to the memberS without any portion of the weight being sustained by the pivots 7.

The'lower portion of the shank *5 is preferably bent or offset as shown at 9 so as to permit said portion 9 to come in contact with the member 6, but to osition the remaining portion of the shan' 5 and the portion 4* a slight distance away from said member 6, as shown in Fig. 3, so as to permit the easy and free swinging action of said bracket without any possibility of interference with said member 6.

As a matter of still further improvement, the upper or free swinging end of the portion 4* is bent laterally to form a flange or projection 10 which provides a broad seat for the cover 2 and this flange 10 is preferably inclined somewhat so as to correspond with the inclination of the cover 3 when the same is resting on the brackets, whereby formed by said flange 10 with the cover 8, and thereby provide a more effective seat for the cover. The lower end of the portion 4 is also preferably bent to form a projection or flange 11 which gives a broad seat for said portion 4. to rest upon the member 8.

Thus it will be seen that the device is very simple indeed, constituting but a single member and the screw or other pivot for fastening it to the bench, and that devices may be made at very low expense by simply stamping them out of sheet metal into the proper shape. At the same time the device is very eflective, affording a firm and secure support for the cover of the bench when it is inclined, and furthermore it may be.inclosed in the box of the bench without occupying any substantial space, thereby allowing ample room for music or other articles which it is desired to place Within the interior of the bench.

It will be understood that the device may be used for other purposes than that herein set forth.

It will also be understood that Changes and modifications may be made Without departing from the spirit of the invention.

What I claim is:

1. A deviceof the class specified comprising a body portion having a laterally extending shank adapted to be pivotally attached tothemember on WhlChthG'dBVlCQ is mounted, the body portion being extended in a substantially vertical manner and having its lower end constructed to provide a seat to rest upon a top portion of said memberand having its other end provided with a surface adapted to form a seat for the member-to be supported by the-device.
