To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ROBERT L. BENSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Gas-Burners, of which the following is a full,'clear," concise, and exact description.
My invention relates to gas burners of the class employing "screens through which gas is directed for the purpose of its combustion, the screens being employed;toprevent-the 'fla-mes'from striking or'flashing back toward the source of gas supply.- These screens are frequently employed in Bunsen burners in connection with which my invention s par ticularly useful but'to whi'ch class of burners the invention is not to be limited- Hitherto wire screens have been employed but such screens couldnot always be relied upon to prevent the conduction of gas igniting heat therethrough from the flame sides to the gas feedingsides thereof;
My invention has for its object the p'io vision of an improved formation of screen that will positively prevent the gas flame from striking back to the rear of the screen and eflectively obstruct the passage of heat from the flame side of the screen to the gas feeding or rear side thereof in such degree as would ignite the gas at the rear of the screen. The screen of my invention is in the form of a plate structure that is of suf ficient depth or thickness effectively to prevent the passage of that degree of heat which would cause the ignition of gas upon the gas feeding side thereof. This plate structure is provided with holes therethrough that establish communication between the gas feeding side of the screen and the gas burning side thereof, these holes being desirably longer than the breadth or diameter thereof most effectively to prevent the flame from flashing back to the rear of the screen.
The screen of my invention is desirably mounted within the front end of a gas nozzle and in order that the screen may not become so expanded due to the heating thereof as to break the nozzle, I make the screen of dish shape so that instead of expanding laterally it will expand-longitudinally, the dishing of the screen increasing with its expansion.

The burner illustrated is a Bunsen burner having a pipe 1 for the passage of gas from a suitable source to the nozzle 2 where the gas is to burn. The structure is constituted a Bunsen burner by means of the orifices 3 which convey air to the pipe, the air and gas being mixed in the portion of the pipe between the front end of the nozzle and said orifices. ,The valve 4: may be employed to regulate the amount of air passed to the gas. Where a short and thick gas flame is desired the nozzle 2 is of greater diameter than the gas pipe 1 but the invention is not to be limited to the relative sizes of the nozzle and than the thickness of the metal through which it extends. Two assembled laminae are usually suflicient to form a screen and as the holes in both laminae are similarly positioned the laminae may be assembled so that the holes in one will be in registry with the holes in the other. Each composite hole formed by each pair or sets of registering holes is of a length greater than its breadth for the purpose stated. The assembly ofthe laminae is desirably eifected by means of a rivet 8 passing axially therethrough. Holes in the laminae are desirably maintained in registry by means of this rivet and a protuberance 9 upon one lamina received in a corresponding depression 10 in the other. The screen rests against a shoulder 11 formed within the nozzle 2, the front end of the nozzle being inturned to form a rim 12' that overlies the screen that is rigidly confined between the rim and shoulder. The screen is preferably inwardly dished so that when it is heated it will not radially expand to such an extent as to crack the nozzle but will, rather, bulge inwardly to relieve the nozzle of the expansion pressure.
The as burner illustrated is preferably adapted for use in connection with gas heated flat irons. The flames in gas heated irons have downward pitch making efiective and durable screens indispensable, requirements which are not met by ordinary gauze screen but which ar fulfilled by the screen of my invention. In the case of wire screens the screen holes are apt to become enlarged thereby increasing the tendency of the flames to strike back through the screens.
While I have herein shown and particularly described the preferred embodiment of my invention I do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction shown as changes may readily be made without departing from the spirit of my invention, but
having thus described my invention Iclaim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent the following I r A gas burner including a nozzle and a dished screen of plate formation for preventing the gas flame from striking back to the gas flowing through the nozzle to the flame and having holes therethrough that are longer than their breadth, saidscreen being formed of assembled laminae each having holes therethrough that are shorter than their breadth and which register with the holes in the other lamina. 1
