Be it known that I, HENRY WV. ELLs- WORTH, a citizen of the United States, and

resident of Montvale, county of Bergen, State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bookbinding, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to bindings for books and is an improvement on the device disclosed by my Patent No. 565,381, granted August 4, 1896.

The object of my present invention is to provide a binding means for books, especially drawing books, blanks and copy books, having the advantages of my patented binding, and in which the binding cord or medium does not pass around or across the back of the book, this being an undesirable feature of my former invention.

In the drawings,

Figure 1 is a perspective view representing a book embodying my improvements, the book being shown open and perfectly fiat;

Fig. 2, is a perspective view showing the two parts of the cover thrown back to back;

Fig. 8 is a perspective view of an open book looking at the inside, illustrating the manner of securing the binding cord;

Fig. 4 is a perspective outside view of a book provided with my binding means and showing in dotted lines a reinforcing strip attached.

The cover of the book 10 is of paper, cardboard or other material such as ordinarily used for this purpose and is preferably of one piece, creased and bent in the middle. It may, however, be of two pieces held together by a binding means.

The leaves 11 are single leaves, somewhat smaller than the cover and provided with holes as 12, 13, 14 and 15, (Figs. 1 and 2) at or near each end, and adjacent the inner edges. The cover is provided with corresponding holes 16, 17 18 and 19 at one end and 20, 21, 22 and 23 at the other, and through the corresponding holes in leaves and cover is passed the binding medium or cord 24.

The cord 24 is passed first through the hole 16 outwardly from the inside of the cover; it is then passed back through hole 17, then through hole 12 in the leaves, then Specification of Letters Patent.

out through hole 18, in through hole 19, then through the leaves again at 13, and is finally tied in a knot at 25 so that a closed loop is formed. The loop is not made tight but is left slack so that the leaves may be turned without having the cord saw the edges of the holes. The cord 24 is not out after being knotted at 25 but is continued lengthwise of the back and used to form a second loop or hinge 20, 21, 22, 23 at the other end of the cover, so that one length of string only is used in the operation. The cord passes to the outside of the cover through hole 20, is brought in through 21, then passes through the hole in the leaves 14 and out again through hole 22 in the cover. The cord passes along the outside of the cover between holes 22 and 23 therein, is brought in through hole 23, passed through the leaves again at 15 and is finally knotted to itself at 26 to form a second closed loop or hinge 20, 21, 22, 28. From the drawings it will be apparent that the only portions of the binding medium not inside the cover of the book are the comparatively short lengths 1617, 18-19, 2021 and 2223. The cords do not extend across the ridge of the back so as to be subject to a sawing action when the book is used, and there is there fore no danger of the leaves and cover becoming separated due to the cutting 43f the binding medium.

In the drawings I have shown a single cord or binding medium, but if desired, a separate cord may be employed for each set of openings.

If desired, a reinforcing strip 27 of cloth or other material (shown by the dotted lines Fig. 4), can be glued on the back of the book and the portions of the binding medium on the outside of the cover will not interfere in any way with the adhesion of the strip, nor will the adhesion of the strip interfere with the action of the binding medium.

Having described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters-Patent is:

In a book of the class described, the combination of front and back covers having two spaced sets of openings which are arranged adjacent the back edges of the covers in rows parallel thereto and which openings register in pairs when the book is closed, separate leaves arranged between the covers and having openings which register with the cover openings when the book is closed, and a single binding cord having one end looped through one set of openings and the other end looped through the other set, the cord in each set of openings extending "parallel with the back edges on the outside of the cover and at right angles with the back 1U edges inside and between the covers.
