PICTURE AND PROCESS OF MAKING THE SAME.
1,269,45&
To all whom it mail" concern:
Be it known that I, JosErH Gr.
a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Haddam, county of Middlesex, and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pictures and Processes of Making the Same, of which the following is a specification. This invention relates to new and improved art products-pictures and the processes of making the same. The present mvention is supplemental to that disclosed in my Patent No. 1,144,964, granted June 29th, 1915, upon an application filedDecember 24th,'1913, and is the result of rogressive work in this art. i
11 general terms the process to be followed in carrying outmy present invention as well asthat which wasfollowed in the invention of my patent, consists in making a drawing or'design in any well known manner upon a suitable fabricwhich is of such" character that it is more or less transparent or translucent. Upon another medium I place the principal details of thefdesign or picture borne upon the first mentioned fabric, which details 1 are colored order H to give correct color valuesto the design; The fabric or medium bearing the design is superposed over the color design, the two designs being held in register with each other.
Referring to the drawings;
Figure 1 is a front view of the transparent medium having thereon the picture and principal details of an uncolored design or picture shown in reverse position from that of Fig. 2.
Fig. 2 is a front view of the opaque medium with a similar picture thereon to which the colors are applied.
Fig. 3 is a section through the complete article provided with a supporting mat.
Fig. 4 is a section through a complete article having an embossed bead formed around the edge of the under or opaque medium.
Fig. 5 is a section of a complete article with the embossed bead or ridge extending Specification of Letters Patent. Patented June Jill, igllfi. Application filed February 21, 1916. Serial No. 79,555.
Fig. 7 is a section of comparatively heavy paper or celluloidor similar material with a monochrome or neutral image on one side and the colors on the other side.
I find that the so called atmospheric effect ofsuch picture is enhanced by a slight separation between the plane of the two mediums which superpose each other. This canbe"accomplished by means of a mat or frame 10 or any similar device being placed between the two mediums,so that the one medium A is held in a separated position from that of the other medium B as clearly shown in Fig. 3. The same result canbe accomplished in a very easy and desirable way by either embossing or pressing out a border 11 from the surface of the lower medium or under plane B to the proper de gree of elevation, as shown in Fig. 4, or
else embossing or pressing downward a ridge 12 froma supporting mm or frame 10" carrying the upper or translucent or transparent plane ormedium A as shown in'l ig. 5. By these two" latter features these structures do away with the necessity of providing an additional pieceor element asamat. u
I have found that sheets of various sorts of paper coated or impregnated with paraflin and then sensitized for the purpose of making photoprints is an efficient method of making the upper or translucent plane, and that this is very effective and easy to operate for certain kinds of work.
Another eflicient means of obtaining the transparent or translucent medium, or that medium which carries the neutral composition, is to use a regular positive made from a photograph negative produced either on celluloid, gelatin, glass or any other suitable substance varying in its thickness as the eifects seem to require. A glass dry plate with one side ground, frosted or sand blasted makes a very good upper plane.
Another eflicient upper medium is produced by incorporating a material like Japan paper or silk, or any similar material with a stiffer medium as a background, as for instance, celluloid, insoluble gelatin or a heavy paper made translucent or transparent by an acid or parafiin treatment.
I have found that it is possible to produce some very beautiful effects by using as the upper or translucent plane or medium A a structure obtained by taking two sheets of thin paper '15 and 15 and securing between them a clear sheet of celluloid or similar material 16, thereby making a threeply sheet, as illustrated in Fig. 6.
Another very efficient method of obtaining a so called sub-chromatic effect is to use a "comparatively heavy Japer or celluloid or a similar material Ii, first making it transparent, then placing the outlines of the image as at 20 on one side and the colors in proper registration on the reverse side as at 21. This structure is illustrated in Fig. 7. a q
I have found it very desirable to add in places to the outlines of the design on the transparent or translucent medium where it makes the picture more effective or truthful to nature, a little white pigmentor paint or ink or similar material to bring out contrasts, and I have also found it helpful and effective to use other colors in greater or 25 less degree to enhance the color work underneath.
It is apparent that changes may be made without departingfrom the spirit or scope of my invention. I have shown and described what I consider to be at the present time, the best embodiments of my inventionpbut it is to be understoodthat the features shown in the drawing and herein described are illustrative, merely, and I do not intend the invention to be in any way 7 restricted, save as specified in the subjoined claims.
Havlng now described my invent on, what Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the*0 o1i1m if ssionr of latentjs,
I claim as new and desire to secure by Leters Pat n i 1- A u H A des gn or picture consisting of an opaque medium havingcolor values thereon, a transparent medium having merely the outlines o fthe. designor, picture therevalues placed thereon, a transparent me dium having the'contours or principal details thereon in varying colors, the two mediums secured to each other with the designs in register.
4. A design orpicture consistingof an opaque support or medium having color values thereon, a transparent mediun having the principal detailsof the designs in black and white, the two mediums secured to each other with the designs in register. a In witness whereofl havehereunto set my hand atthe borough of lllanhattan, city, county and Sta day of February, 1916.
