UNDERCUTTER-GUIDE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 11, 1918.
Application filed January 7, 1916. Serial No. 70,814.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Tim C. DRAKE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rochester, in the county of-Thurston and State of lVashington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Undercutter- Guides; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to improvements in undercutter guides for crosscut saws.
The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of undercutter guides for crosscut saws and to provide a simple, practical and inexpensive undercut guide equipped with an edged tool adapted to perform the double function of supporting the guide on a log and of enabling slabs to be cut off to release a saw when the same is necessary.
A further object of the invention is to provide an undercutter guide of'this character having a chisel capable of general use where a relatively large tool of this kind is desired.
Another object of the invention is to provide an undercutter guide capable of ready adjustment for arranging the guiding wheel in the proper position and adapted to securely lock the supporting means in its adjustment.
Vith these and other objects in view the invention consists in the-construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claim hereto appended, it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the drawings Figure l is a side elevation of an undercutter guide constructed in accordance with this invention,
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same,
Fig. 3 is a side elevation showing the opposite side from that illustrated in Fig. 1,
Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view taken substantially on line 4-4 of Fig. 3,
Fig. 5 is a detail view of the bolt, the toothed wheel and the supporting arm.
Like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in the several figures of the drawings.
In the accompanying drawings in which is illustrated the preferred embodiment of the invention, the undercutter guide comprises in its construction, a chisel 1 consist ing of a blade 2, a handle 3 and a flat intermediate portion 4 arranged in a plane at right angles to the plane of the chisel blade 2 and provided at one side with an annular boss 5 having a central opening 6 for the re-- ception of a transverse bolt 7. The opening 6 is tapered as shown and the bolt which has a cylindrical head is provided with a tapered or conical intermediate portion 8 which fits the tapered opening. The bolt is alsoprovided with a threaded portion 9 receiving a tail nut 10 which is located atthe face of the intermediate portion 4 op posite that at which the boss is arranged.
A washer 11 is interposed between the tail nut 10 and the side of the intermediate portion 4 and the rounded or cylindrical head of the bolt is provided with a trans verse opening 12 for the reception of a supporting arm 13 which also engages a groove 14 of a toothed wheel 15 whereby the latter is interlocked with the bolt. The toothed wheel 15 which has-an opening 16 to receive the head of the bolt is interposed be tween the supporting arm 13 and the boss or enlargement of the intermediate portion 4 of the chisel and it is provided with peripheral teeth 17 and intervening recesses 18 conforming to the configuration of a stud 19 projecting from the adjacent face of the intermediate portion 4 of the chisel. The bolt is adapted to be loosened to enable the toothed wheel to be disengaged and rotated to arrange the supporting arm in the desired position, and when the desired adjustment is elfected the bolt is to maintain the toothed wheel tightly in engagement with the chisel and the stud thereof.
The supporting arm which preferably has a flat inner face 20 to fit the groove is supported in the opening of the bolt by a key 21 or other suitable fastening device and it is provided at its lower end with an outwardly extending shaft 22 which carries a grooved wheel 23. The grooved wheel which is retained on the shaft 22 by a key 24 or other suitable fastening means is adapted to receive the blade of an undercut saw to enable the saw to cut beneath a log in the usual manner. The supporting arm and the shaft are constructed of resilient material and the shaft is adapted to yield or spring as the arcs-scat saw is moved backwardly and forwardly andrgives and takes to the Wood. The chisel is adapted to be readily driven into the log for snpporting the undercutter guide and it is adapted for cutting off slabs thatoften split down in cutting the log ofl' from the top of thelatter. i
In practice, the log often splits down and a small slab will catch the saw so that it has to be cut loose. The chisel of the undercutter is exceedingly convenient for this purpose and it may be employed for a variety of other purposes where a tool of this character is desired.
What is claimed is An underoutter guide including a chisel constituting a supporting member and adapted to be driven into a log, said chisel consisting of a blade, a handle and an intermediate portion having flat side faces arranged in aplane at right angles to the plane of the blade, said intermediate portion being provided with an integral laterailly projecting boss lia-ring an inwardly tapered opening, a bolt 1 assing through the opening and provided with an enlarged tapered portion fitting the same, ajoothed wheel mounted on the enlarged portion of the boltgand projecting beyond the boss, a supporting arm piercing the enlarged portion of the bolt :and interlocked with the toothed Wheel, and a pin projecting laterally from the Hat intermediate portion of the chisel and engaging the toothed Wheel at the periphery thereof to secure the Wheel and: the supporting arm in an adjusted position with relation to the chisel, and a guide 'wheel carried by the supporting arn' In testimony whereof I affix my signa ture in presence OE two Witnesses.
