ADAM GREGG TEASON, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
VEHICLE-CURTAIN.

Application filed March 7, 1917.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ADAM G. TEASON, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vehicle-Curtains, of which the following is a specification.
This invention consists in means for fastening in place the mica, celluloid, glass, or other transparent or translucent strips, sheets, panes, sections, or parts inserted in vehicle curtains or the like to permit vision therethrough or the ingress of light and such modifications in the construction of the curtain itself as may be necessary or desirable for the use of the said fastening means.
This invention is applicable either to the old-style curtains, in which. a relatively large strip of transparent or translucent material occupies approximately the center and a large part of the area of the curtain or to the more modern foldable curtains comprising alternated horizontal or vertical sections or strips of such transparent or translucent material and leather or canvas strips or sections, the object of the said more modern construction being to allow the curtain to fold into less space without breaking the mica or similar material than is possible where the hereinbefore-mentioned relatively large area near the center of the curtain is occupied by a sheet of the same.
The merit of the present invention resides in the quickness, ease, and consequent cheapness of fastening curtain window panes into place and in the fact that, instead of its being necessary for the owner of the vehicle to take his curtain to some place where a skilled workman can remove a piece of broken mica or the like and secure a new piece in place in the curtain by sewing, the owner of the vehicle can simply make a purchase of the transparent or translucent material and fasten it himself in its proper place. In addition, some curtains are not removable from. the vehicle without the ripping of sewing or removal of tacks or other retaining means. Such detachment of such curtains is obviated by this invention.
In the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification and in which like numbers of reference denote like parts wherever they occur.
Figure 1 is an elevation taken from the Specification of Letters Patent.

Serial No. 153,009.
outside of a curtain (partly broken away at the left-hand end) Fig. 2 is a sectional view in Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary view of the transparent or translucent material, showing the perforations or eyelets therethrough; and
Fig. 4: is a sectional view, on a scale slightly enlarged in comparison with the other figures, showing a fastener in place holding the window pane in place in relation to the curtain.
The transparent or translucent strip, sheet, pane, or the like 1 may be of any desired shape or size and may run horizontally or vertically, longitudinally or laterally, or in any other direction.
The transparent or translucent element 1 is clamped to the curtain material 2 by a plurality of separate or individual fasteners 3.
These. fasteners may be any suitable kind of clamp that will at intervals along the periphery of theelement l fasten the same to the element 2, and in the use of such clamps it may not be obligatory (although in the preferred form herein more particularly shown and described it is more convenient) to provide the element 1 with a plurality of perforations or eyelets 4 in order that the shank 5 of the preferred form of fastener may pass therethrough for springfrictional engagement and detention by the clamp member 6 of fastener 3. In this construction the clamp 6 will be on one side of the material 2 and the shank 5 borne by the base 7 will be not only on the other side of the material 2, but also on the other side of the element 1, so that when pressed together both parts of the fastener 3 (consisting of the clamp member 6 and the shank member 5) will be in comparatively tight frictional engagement with each other and will clamp between them a part of the elements 1 and 2 and, if desired, the trimming or fastening strip or strips 8 and 9, the said strip 8 being on the outside of the curtain and the said strip 9 upon its inside.
It will be understood that if the element 1 is made of any flexible material that will readily bend between the opposing male and female members of the fasteners 3, it will when such material is used be possible to omit the perforations or eyelets 4.. Likeon the line 22 wise, it is to be understood thattthe relative arrangement of the socket or clamp 6 and shank 5 may be altered, if desired, by inversion or otherwise. Nor is it intended that in the use of this invention the precise form of fastener disclosed in the drawings shall be necessary, but other forms of ball-andsocket fasteners or other fasteners maybe used.
The trimming or edging strips 8 and 9 may in some cases be omitted, but are preferable not only for the sake of appearance, which is improved by their trimming effect, but also to strengthen the construction so as to prevent pulling out of the fastener through the material of elements 1 and 2. They may be glued or cemented at their outer "edges to the adjacent material 2.
Since it is desirable to exclude rain from the inside of a vehicle curtain, the element 1 will at its top preferably be on the inside of the curtain, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings, but for the purpose of drainage it is likewise preferable that the same should at its bottom be on the out-sideof the curtain 2, as also shown in Fig. 2.
In order that the upper part of the element 1 may be upon the inside of the curtain and the lower part on the outside thereof, the curtain is slit at 10, andto prevent tearing of the material 2 opposite the saidslits 1O reinforcements 11 are attached to the material 2 by stitchingor otherwise.
Having thus described this invention, I hereby reserve the benefit of all changes in form, arrangement, order, or use of parts as it is evident that many minor changes may be made therein without departing from the spirit of this invention.
I claim:
1. A vehicle curtain having a window pane therein composed of non-opaque material, theu-pper part of the said pane being upon the inside of the curtain and the lower part on the outside of the said curtain, there beinga slit in the said curtain through which the said ,pane passes from the inside to the outside of the said curtain.
2. A vehicle curtain comprising a body portion, a vision portion or portions, and means for connectingthe said body portion to the said vision portion or portions, the upper part of the latter being uponthe inside of-the former, there being a slit in the said body portion through which the said vision portion or portions passes or pass to the front of the {body portion, and reinforcements opposite the said slits.
3. A vehicle curtain comprising a body portion having a window pane therein composed of non-opaque material said pane being disposed with its upper edge lying inwardly of the body portion and overlapping the same and with its lower edge disposed outwardly of the body portion and overlapping the same.
4. A curtain ofthe type described, having asight-opening therein, a pane of transparent or di aphanous material positioned to cover said sight-opening and having its marginal edges applied directly to said curtain, around the edges of said sight opening, the upper edges of said pane lying inwardly of the :body of said curtain and overlapping the same, and the lower edge of said pane disposed outwardly of said curtain-bodyportion and overlapping the same, and independent detachable two-part fastenings for binding the pane and curtain together.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aliiX my signature.
