To all whom it may concern 7 Be it known that I, GEORGE E. KING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newton, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in l/Vinding Devices, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a winding handle or key for spring or weight-driven motors, such for instance as the motor of a fire alarm box, which is inclosed in a case, and has particular reference to keys for operating the winding shaft of such motors, -1 n which the part grasped by the hand 1s adapted to be folded or swung to a positlon perpendicular to the axis of the winding shaft in order that the winding key may occupy a less extended space when not in use, so that said key may be left permanently attached to the winding shaft, and not require deeper case to inclose it and the mechanism. p
The object of my invention is to provide a winding key with a resilient handle which is adapted to be maintained in either extended or folded back position, as required, and which will remain in or tend to return to extended position when released by the Operator to obtain a fresh winding hold, and
which will be neat in appearance, cheap to manufacture, and simple in construction.
The resilient handle of my invention may consist of a sheet metal plate folded upon itself, or reflexed, thereby to form aspring element. The handle has end-extensions which are adapted to engage other than round holes in the opposite sides of a hub, and which have a normal tendency to spring apart and engage the sides of the holes, and thereby tend to maintain the handle in either fully-extended or fold-ed position. Said hub has suitable means adapting it for engagement with, and being. secured to, the winding shaft of the motor.
Figure 1 represents the winding handle in folded position, as attached to the winding shaft of a fire-alarm box motor, in which position the door of the box may be properl closed.

Figs. 8, 9, and 10 are elevations of the winding handle in respectively, folded, partially extended, and fully extended positions.
The winding handle, as here shown, comprises a handle portion formed from a plate and reflexed to form the resilient arms 15, and a hub which consists of a bodybor'tion 16, and a cover-portion 17. The arms 15 ofthe handle are provided with squared inwardly-extending bearing-portions or extensions 18, and the body-portion 16 of the hub is or maybe provided with asquare slot 19 in which the inwardly-extending portions 18 of the handle are disposed for movable con nection with said huh. Body-portion 16 of the hub has an annular recess formed in one Ofthe face portions thereof, and the cover-portions 17 is'placed in this recess, with the bearing-portions 18 of the handle in place in the slot 19', and the walls 20 of the annular recess are then forced over the said cover-portion to form an integrally-formed hub and to formthe closing wall for slot 19a'nd thereby to'main tain said handles in permanent engagement with said hub, The hub has an axial hole 21 of square or otherthan round cross section, which is adapted for engagement with the correspOndingly-formed end-portion of the winding shaft of the motor, and a set screw 22 is provided whereby the winding handle may be secured to said winding shaft.

position, as shown in Figs. 4!, 7, and 8, the flat bearing-portions 18 of the arms 15 are in engagement with the. opposite flat sides of the slot 19, and are foreed in-to contact therewith by the resiliency of the handle. As the handle is moved toward an extended position, the edges of the bearing-portions 18 engage the sides of the slot 19, and said bearing-portions and the resilient arms are moved into close proximity with each other, against the tension of the Spring formed by said arms, the walls of the slot 19 and the bearing-portions 18 acting as cam and follower respectively, until the intermediate position illustrated in Fig. 9 is reached. Upon Specification of Letters Patent. Pafentgd June 11, 19'18 a movement of the handle beyond this intermediate position, the action between the walls of the slot and the bearing-portions of the handle is reversed, and the resiliency of the handle operates to force said handle to a fully-extended position, as shown in Fig. 10, in which the flat bearing-portions 18 are again in contact with the opposite flat walls of the slot 19, and are maintained in contact therewith by the resiliency of the handle, and said handle is thereby maintained in fully-extended position unless deliberately moved to folded position. The handle, when displaced somewhat from fully-extended or fully-folded position, and the displacing force released, will tend to return to either one or the other of the two positions.
I claim 1. A folding winding-device including a hub adapted for engagement with a winding shaft, a handle having resilient means engaging said hub, and coacting therewith to be maintained in certain definite positions relative thereto, and to be prevented from being maintained in certain other positions relative thereto.
2. A folding winding-device including a hub adapted for engagement with a winding shaft, and having a slot extended transversely therethrough, a resilient handle having extensions thereon pressed into yielding engagement with the walls of the slot in said hub, and so coacting therewith as to be maintained in certain definite positions relative to said hub, and to be prevented from being maintained in certain other positions relative to said hub.
8. A folding winding-device including a hub adapted for engagement with a winding shaft, and having a square slot extended transversely therethrough, a resilient handle having rectangular extensions yieldingly engaging the slot in said hub, and so coacting therewith as to be maintained in certain definite positions relative to said hub, and to be prevented from being maintained in certain other positions relative to said hub.

A folding winding-device including a hub adapted for engagement with a winding shaft, and having a square slot extended transversely therethrough, a handle formed of a resilient plate reflexed to form two sub- Qeeilen at this patent may he obtained for slot in said hub, and so coacting therewith that said handle is maintained in certain definite positions relative to said hub.
5. A folding winding-device including a hub adapted for engagement with a winding shaft, and provided with a square slot, a handle formed of a resilient plate reflexed to form two substantially parallel arms having parallel inwardly-projecting end-extensions disposed in the slot in said hub and maintained in contact with the walls of the slot by the resiliency of said plate, said slot and extensions coacting to form cam mem bers which operate conjunctively to maintain said handle in certain definite positions relative to said hub.
6. A folding winding-device including a handle having inwardly-projecting end-extensions, a hub adapted for engagement with a winding-shaft, said hub consisting of a body-portion having a recess in one end thereof and a transverse slot extending therethrough, a side wall surrounding the recess in said body-portion, a cover plate including opposed radially-extending projections, said cover plate adapted to fit within the recess in said body-portion and said radially-extending projections adapted to register with the transverse slot in said body-portion, said side wall being adapted to be turned over said cover plate whereby said cover plate is secured in the depression or recess of said body-portion to form a cover for the slot in said body-portion and to secure said handle extensions in the slot and to form a hub.
7. A folding winding device including a hub adapted for engagement with a winding shaft, a handle formed of a resilient plate reflexed to form two substantially parallel arms movably engaging said hub and coacting therewith to be maintained in certain definite positions relative thereto, and to be prevented from being maintained in other relative positions thereto.
