Description

PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES CATON, OF COSHOCTON, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN MlTER-BOXES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 126,873, dated May 21, 1872.
SPECIFICATION.
Toall whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES CATON, of Coshocton, in the county of Coshocton and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Miter-Box; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
This invention consists in details of construction by means of which a miter-box possessin g marked advantages is obtained, as will be fully described hereinafter.
In the drawing is shown a perspective view of my improved miter-box.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will now proceed to describe fully its construction and operation.
A represents a base board, of any proper size, which is supported at each corner by means of headed pins a held in place by means of a nut. B represents a supplemental board, secured in place by screws, which, from its position, is adapted to receive the cuts of the saw, as shown, which board, when worn, may be easily removed and be replaced by a new one. 0 represents a semicircular iron, provided with proper bases at each end, which bases arefirmly secured to the board in any proper manner. 1) represents a socket, adapted to slide upon the semicircular iron C, which socket is provided with a set-screw to fix it in any desired position. It has also a threaded orifice in which rests the screw E, to the lower end of which latter is attached, by a swivel-joint, the clevis F. Between the arms of the clevis is central- 1y pivoted the saw-guide G, constructed in any side, in such manner as to be flush with its face, as shown. By means of the rods and the depressions in the plates the lower edge of the saw-guide is securely held in any proper position. I represents the guide-board, pivoted at t near one end, and adapted to swing with the bar 6 at the other, it being secured in any desired position by means of the set-screw and nut i as shown.
The operation is as follows: By adjusting the miter-box I by means of its set-saw, the saw may be made to cut at any desired angle across the wood from side to side. This result i may also be accomplished by swinging the sawguide upon its pivot. By moving the socket upon the semicircular iron 0 the saw is inclined in such manner as to cut any desired incline from the top to the bottom of the molding or other article being out. The devices upon the semicircular iron and upon the plates H permit the adjustments to be accurately and quickly made. The device as a whole is simple in its construction and effective in its operation.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The base A, supported as described, in combination with the removable board B and plates H H as described.
'2. The semicircular iron C, in combination with the sliding socket, having the set-screw and screw E, supporting the said guides, as described.
3. The swiveled sawguide, provided with the screw-rods g g, as described.
4. The combination of the semicircular iron,
the sliding socket, the swiveled saw-guide, the
screw-rods, and the base board, as described.
This specification signed and witnessed this 30th day of March, 1872.
