Be it known t at I CARL J.'Fnnnsu, a and a resident of Elyria, in the county of'Lorain and State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Paper-Box Handle, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

My invention relates to a handle for paper boxes and has'reference more particularly to a detachable handle.

slits are enlarged to form slots 12 for accommodating therein a flexible tape 13 which asto reinforce the cardboard washer. The I ends of the flexible member are passed through he apertures in the washers before they are secured. In consequence, a portion of each hasher will be in en agement with the tongue 9 when the ban e is engaged with the body.

To bring the handle into engagement, the tongue 9 is forced out of the slits (see Fig. 3), allowing the flexible member to slide .past the head of the tongue to enter the slots 12. By pulling on the handle from the other side (see Fig. 4), the head is drawn or forced into the slit, that is, home, thereby locking the handle to the body section 7.

The cover section 8'has a cut-out 16 adapted to register with the flexible member 13 when the coversection is engaging the body section. The width of'the cut-out is greater than the width of the flexible member 13 so that the flexible member can be easily pulled through the cut-out 16. The cut-out 16 has transverse notches 17 at the ends thereof which permit the telescoping of the cover.

By providing the flexible member of the handle with washers and the tongue in the body section with lateral projections at the free end thereof, an interlocking arrangement is rovided in thebox for the handle. As will e noted from, Figs. 3 and 4:, the tendenc of the washers is to draw the tongue omewhen a pull is exerted .on the handle, in view of the fact that each washer is in engagement with the tongue and with the body section. The notches 17 in the cutout 16 permit the telescopiriilg of the two sections and, therefore, w accommodate packing in the boxes over their normal capacities, thereby dispensing with the necessity of employing at variety of boxes of va sizes.

In a paper box, a body section, atongue in one of the sides of the body section having a head at the free end thereof adapted to fit tightly into the side in which it is formed, said side of body portion having slots at the sides of the tongue beyond the head which are adapted to accommodate a handle, a flexible member adapted to be fitted into said slots when said tongue is forced out from its engagement with the side of the body section, and washers associated with the ends of said flexible member and adapted to engage the side and the tongue whereby when a pull is exerted on said flexible member the tongue is forced I into engagement with the side, thereby lockmg said flexible member in the slots and preventing lateral movement of the flexible member in the slots.
