Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. HAUGH- mm a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, inthe county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spring-Oiling Devices, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in oiling devices for leaf'springs; and the object of my invention is to provide an oiling device of novel, simple and efficient construction which may be readily applied to or removed from a spring and which, when applied to the spring will effectually oil or lubricate the sameby a proper supply of oil properly distributed to the joints between the leaves of the spring. With this and related objects in View my invented device consists of the elements thereof and the combinations of them hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings illustrating my invention:
Figure l is a side view of a portion of a leaf spring having an oiling device embodyingmy invention applied thereto.
Fig. 2 is a plan view, on a larger scale, of the parts shown in Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a bottom view of the part adapted to receive and contain the oil for distribution to the leaves of the spring.
Fig. 4 is a section through the device, on line 4.L of Fig. 1.
Fig. 5 is a section through the spring on line 5-5 of Fig. 1, showing the oiling device in the distance.
Referring to the drawings, 2 designates a portion of a leaf spring and 3 my improved oiling device which is mounted on the spring 2 and comprises two side members 6, clamping bolts 7, pads 8 and a part 9 adapted to receive and contain the lubricating oil.
The side members 6 are made hollow and are open at their inner sides and they are adapted to be placed adjacent to the respective sides of the spring2, as shown in the drawings. The upperportions of the members 6 are provided with projections 20 which extend inwardly over the top of the spring 2; and the lower portions of the members 6 are provided with projections 10 which extend inwardly beneath the spring 2,
and clamped to the sides of the springs 2 the bolts 7, the two upper ones of which extend over the spring 2 and through the pads 8 and members'6, and the lower one of which extends under the spring 2. When the bolts 7 are tightened, the inner portions of the pads 8 are forced into the cavities or grooves formed between the outer portions of the leaves of the spring 2 and the members 6 and pads 8 are clamped to the spring.
The part 9 comprises a top wall 11, a bottom wall 12 and side walls 13 and forms an oil chamber 14 having open ends. This part 9 extends transversely across the top of the spring 2 and its open end portions are inserted into the upper portions of the hollow side members 6 so that the open ends of the chamber 14; are in communication with the hollow side members 6. The bottom. wall 12 of the part 6 is made shorter than the top wall 11 thereof so that the upper end portions of the pads 8 may extend'into the outer end portions of the oil chamber 9, and so that the outer ends of the top wall 11 may extend over the tops of the pads 8 and between them'and the top walls of the side members 6. The length of the top wall 11 of the part 9 is such with relation to the width of the spring 2 and the depth of the hollow side members 6 as to permit free relative movement between the members 6 toward each other and between the members 6 and the part 9 when the bolts 7 are tightened to clamp the device to the spring 2;
and, when the bolts 7 are thus tightened, the
outer ends of the bottom wall 12 pinches-the pads 8 between them and the outer walls of the members 6 and prevents oil within the chamber 14 from being absorbed too freely by the pads, while the lower portion of the pads engaged with the spring 2 permits free distribution of the oil throughout them by capillary attraction and by gravity.
The side members 6 and the pads 8 are tapered downwardly and inwardly, as shown in Fig. 1, so that the pads 8 diminish in size as they extend away from the open ends of the oil chamber 14 for the even distribution of oil throughout the pads; and to increase the feed of the oil from the chamber 14 to the central portion of the pads 8, I provide the outer central portions of the bottom wall 12 of the oil chamber 14 with cut out portions 15, as clearly shown in Fig. 3, and through which the oil may pass down through the pads 8 more freely than at the sides of the pads.
The top wall 11 of the oil chamber 14 is provided with an opening 16 through which the chamber 14 may be supplied with oil, as occasion may require, and the opening 16 is normally closed by a suitable cover 17 which is pivoted at 18, on the top wall 11 and which may be moved on its'pivot to close or expose the opening 16.
The upper clamping bolts 7 extend through the oil chamber 14 of the part 9 and they are thereby concealed from view, presenting a plain and neat finish for the top .of the oiling device 3.
When the device 3 is applied to the spring 2 as described herein and illustrated in the drawings, and the chamber 14 is supplied with oil, the oil will, by capillary attraction and by gravity, fill the pads 8, and, thereafter, the oil will, by capillary attraction work its way in between the leaves of the spring 2 for the lubrication thereof. After the oil has worked its way into the spring 2 between the pads 8, the oil will,
by capillary attraction work its way from the device 3 throughout the length of the spring 2 between the leaves thereof.
I claim:
1. An oiling device for leaf springs comprising two hollow members adapted to be applied to the sides of a spring, oiling pads within said members and adapted to engage the sides of a spring, a part adapted to contain oil and extending between said pads and into the upper portions of said members and having open ends for the discharge of oil, said part permitting said members to move relatively to it and to each other, and
means to draw the upper portions of said members toward each other to clamp said pads between the ends of said part and said vmembers and ,to clamp a spring between said members.
2. An oiling device for leaf springs comprising two hollow members adapted to be applied to the sides of a spring, oiling pads within said members and adapted to engage the sides-of a spring, a part adapted to contain oil and extending between and into the within said members and adapted'toengage the sides of a spring, a part adapted tocontain oil and extending between and into the upper portions of said members and having open ends for the, discharge of oil, said part having atop wall, side walls and: a bottom wall shorter than the top wall and extending between said pads, and means to draw the upper portions of said'member's toward each other to clamp said pads be tween the ends of said bottom wall and said members andto clamp a spring between said members, the central portions of the ends of said bottom wall having cut out portions permitting oil to flow to said pads from the central portion of said part more freely than from the side portions thereof.
4. An oiling devicefor leaf springs comprising two hollow side members adapted to be applied to the sides of a spring, oiling pads within said hollow members and adapted to engage the sides of a spring, means todraw said members toward each other to clamp a spring between them,
and a part adapted to contain oil and extending between and into said members and having a top wall, a bottom wall, side walls and open ends communicating with said members, the bottom wall of said part being shorter than the top wall thereof, and the end portions of said part being adapted to receive the upper portions of said pads.
5. An oiling device for leaf springs comprising two hollow side members adapted to be applied to the sides of a spring, oiling pads within said vhollow members and adapted to engage the sides of a spring,
.means to draw said members toward each other to clamp a spring between them, and
a part adapted to contain oil and extending between and into saidmembers, and having a top wall, a bottom wall, side walls-and open end communicating with said members, the central portions of the ends of the bottom wall of said part having cut out portions permitting oil to flow from said part to the central. portions of said pads.
6. An oiling device for leaf springs comprising two hollow side members adapted to be applied to the sides of a spring, oiling pads within said hollow members and adapted to engage the sides of a spring, means to draw said members toward each other to clamp a spring between them, and a part adapted to contain oil and extending between and into said members and having a top wall, a bottom wall, side walls and open ends communicating with said members, the bottom wall of said part being shorter than the top thereof, and the end portions of said part being adapted to receive the upper portions of said pads, and the central 10 portions of the ends of the bottom wall of said part having cut out portions permitting oil to flow from said part to the central portions of said pads.
