In my present invention, I have eliminated all springe, lati-lies or other mechanical means for keeping the power circuit closed during a full stroke of the type bar, and have employed means entirely electrical for accomplishing the purpose; and I have also eliminated all mechanical means for,` breaking the power circuit', and have substituted electrical means therefor` the movement of the poner armature toward its magnet merely making an electrical Contact (or contat-tsl. instead of moving any mechanical devices. Such electrical Contact accoinplishes the purpose intended by affecting the rnrrent. in the circuit making and breaking magnet (or magnets) and thus moving the armature ot' said magnet. ln the Hausberg patent just mentioned. it will be observed that the arlnatnnl ot that magnet is not ai.

The objet-t ot' iny present invention is to provide au electrically operated typewriter ot simple, durable` and inexpensive Construct ion uhirh shall, he capable of Working rapidly, smoothly` and with little effort on the part of the operator.
A further object is to provide in a peu'riter of this class simple and durable devices whereby, when any key is depressed i'or either a short or a long period of time, the various operations necessary to complete the printing' of n character and to return the type bar to position will be progressively carried out.
A further object is to provide means in a machine of the class described for breaking the circuit of the power magnet upon the completion of the type bar stroke irrespective of any release or movement of the key.
A further object is to provide means for insuringj a full and complete stroke of any type ar upon the depression of its key, whether said depression continues durin the full stroke or not.
A further object is to accomplish the ends contemplated by means of mechanism which is electrical, as distinguished from mechanical, in its operation, so that the movements of the parts shall be rapid and positive, and so that noise, wear, lost motion, and the liability of the parts to get out of order, shall be reduced to a minimum.
My invention consists in the construction,
arrangement and combination of the devices,
whereby the objects contemplated are attained, as hereinafter more fully set forth, pointed ont in my claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:

Fig. 2 illustrates diagrammatically the Construction and arrangement of the electrical elements of my improved typewriter, parts of said diagram being illustrated by mechanical structures for the purpose of makin the illustration more readily understanda le.
In the application of Ernest Hausberg above referred to, there are set forth at considerable length ther construction and operation of the complete typewriting machine. The present application covers only certain limited parts of the invention of the complete typewriting machine and therefore reference is had to said former application for a full and complete descriptlon of such of the parts as are not herein fully described.
The reference numeral 1D indicates generally the frame of the machine and 11 the keys. lVhen any key is depressed its spring l2 forms a contact with the conductor bar 13 and closes a circuit through the corresponding selective magnet 14, as more fully set forth in the said application of Ernest Hausberg. For each selective magnet there is an armature 15, connected b'y a link 16 with a hook lever 17. This hook lever 17 is pivoted to a lever 18, which in turn is opera` tively connected to a type bar 19 so that 66 when the lever 18 is movedrearwardly the type bar will be operated. Adjacent to the lever 18 is a. power. bar 20 connected by a link 21 to a universal power armature 22. This power bar 20 is positioned so that it at willy be engaged by the hook lever 1'( when the latter, upon the depression of a key, is drawn downward by the armature of the corresponding selective magnet, and when the power armature is moved rearwardl the power bar 20 and the upper end o the `7J lever 18 will also be moved rearwardly, thus causing the type bar to be operated. The movable carriage of the typewriter is indicated generally by the reference numeral 23. The upper parts of the brackets 22a serve as 75 a stop to limit the forward 4movement of the arms carrying the power armature.
The electrically operated parts of my invention, which are illustrated particularly in Fig. 2, are as follows: The reference numera] 24 indicates a battery or other source l of electrical energy connected by a conductor wire 25 to the conductor rods 26 under the keys 11. Each key rests upon a conductor spring 27 and when the spring is depressed 85 by the key contact is made with the adjacent conductor bar 26. A condenser 28 is preferably provided between the conductor 25 and the conductors leading from the springs 27 for the purpose primarily of preventing sparking. In the diagram illustrated in Fig. 2, the selective magnets 14 are illustrated by coils, which are connected by conductors 29 with the springs 27.
During the operation of writing on a machine of this kind, it sometimes happens that a key is depressed only for a very short space of time and it sometimes happens that an operator permits his finger to rest upon a key for a comparatively long time.
It is desirable in a machine of this class to have the type bar complete its printing stroke even though the depression of the key does not continue during the stroke, and to have the type bar return automatically to its normal position even though the depression of the key continues beyond the time required for the printing stroke. In order to accomplish these objects most effectively, it is necessary: first, that a selective magnet be energized and that the hook 17 be moved into engagement with the universal bar 20 (for which only a momentary depression of the key is necessary) second, that the universal power magnet, which is indicated generally by the reference numeral 30, be energized and a circuit maintained therein for a sufficient length of time to complete the printing stroke of the type bar regardless ofV whether or not the contact is maintained at the key; and third, that the circuit through the power magnet be broken at the completion of the printing stroke to permit the return of the type bar. i

After the establishing of this` new circuit through the magnet 33. the circuit through the power magnet is then maintained regardless of the position ot' the key and the armature 22 is drawn toward the power magnet.
The universal magnets 32 and 33 and the switch 31 may of course be made as small, and the spring as delicate, as desired so that the action ofthe switch in making the power circuit and the action of the selectin magnet in lowering the hook will be practically simultaneous.
In order to pcrt'orm the third operation, to wit: the break in the circuit through thc power magnet to permit thc return of the type bar, l have provided on the power magnet the contact arm 53 and on the power arurature a contact arm 5l. This movement ot' course is assisted by the magnet S52, which has remained partially energized during this entire operation. llowcver, in order to insure the, magnet 5&2 hclng sulliciently energized t0 more thc switch S5 toward the front, a branch conductor 5S isconnected to theI eonductor 50 and this branch conductor is con nccted to the coil 5t) on the magnet 32% to thereby increase the magnetic power. or take the place of, that at the key. The
means described comprises 4two yielding contact arms 49 and 50, connected respectively with the magnet 30 and the armature 22. The arm 49 is connected b 51, 42 and 42 with one side o thebattery 24, and the arm 50 is connected by the conductor 52 with the conductors 35 and 36, so that, as soon as the armature 22 makes a slight movement toward the power magnet, an independent circuit from the battery 24 is set up through the conductors 42, 42, 51, arms 49 and 50, and conductor 52 to take the lace of the circuit originally establshe through the conductor 34 by the depression of a key.
Assuming that even after the movement of the type bar has been completed, the operator still maintains -pressure Alupon the key, obviousl it is not desirable that this key contact s iould result in repeated movements of the same type bar, and' in order to prevent this I have provided the following devices:
On the switch 31 is a contact plate 67 so arranged that when the switch 31 is at its forward limit a circuit will be established between the conductors 62 and 39, which will result in preventing the circuit established by the depression of the key from moving the switch 31 rearwardly because a circuit will be established through the key and the conductors 27, 29 and 62, through the coil 59 which, in connection with theV circuit already established by the depression of the key through the coil 37, will suiliciently energize the magnet 32" to hold the switch 31 orwardly. As soon as the -circuit is established through the coil 59, as
before described, a circuit will also be es tablished through the branch conductor 58 and through the reverse coil 57 on the magnet 33, thus neutralizing the effect of the other coils on the magnet 33. It will be seen that the contact plate 67 simply takes the place of the contact arms 53 and 54. Hence, as long as the key remains deressed, the switch 31 will be at its forward limit and no further operation of the type bar may be made until said key is released, and upon a release of the key all of the circuits are broken and the switch 31 may then return by means of its spring to a neutral position, as shown in Fig. 2. I preferably provide a condenser 64 between the conductors 43 and 51 to prevent sparking at the contact 63.
In the practical operation of my improvement, the l'irst effect of a depression of a key is to .establish a. circuit through a selective magnet and at the same time through the coils 37 and 40. The coil 37 has more conductorsv resistance than the coil 40 and hence the electromagnet 33 will be energized suiciently to move the switch 31 rearwardly. lVhen this switch is moved rearwardl an independent circuit from the battery 1s established through the switch 31 and through the coil 44 on the power magnet, and. at the same time a circuit is Vestablished through the coil 46 on the magnet 33, thus energizing this magnet to ositively hold the switch 31 regardless of w ether or not the original circuit is broken. Hence a complete power armature stroke is insured. As soon as the power armature moves toward the power ma et, another circuit is established throu h t e contacts 53 and 54 and the establis ing of this independent circuit causes the magnet 33 to be neutralized because the coil 57 thereon is arranged in a reverse direction fromA the otherl coils. At the same time a circuit is established through the coil 59, which is wound in the same direction es the other coil 37, of the magnet 32, and hence serves to reinforce it and aid in moving the switch 31 forwardly or toward the magnet 32 so as to break the circuit for the power magnet. In this 'circuit the current flowsfrom one side of the battery through the conductor 25, contact 26, conductor 29, selective coil 14, conductors 34, 62 and 55, contacts 53 and 54, conductors 56 and 58, the coil 59, and thence through the conductors 60 and 39 to the other side of the battery.
It is necessary to provide means for preventing repeated operation of the type bar in case the depression of the key continues. For this purpose the contact devlce 67 on the switch 31 closes a circuit through the coil 59 on the magnet 32, thus augmenting its power, and also through the coil 57 on the magnet 33, thus neutralizin the latter, so that'the switch device 31 isgpositively held toward the magnet 32a until the key .is released. As soonhowever as the circuit is broken through the key, then the other independent circuits are all broken and the switch 31 may return by its spring to the neutral position, shown 1n Fig. 2.
It will be seen from the fore oing, that, if any key is depressed for a su cient time to establlsh a circuit through a. selective magnet and the switch operatlng device, the power magnet-,will be energized so as to roduce a complete stroke -of the type r, whether the key remains depressed during the stroke or not: and that, t rough the automatic breaking of the circuit of the power magnet the type bar Will be returned to norm'al position whether the key is released or not.

I claim as my invention:
1. In :1n-electrically operated typewriter, the combination of keys, type bars, selective magnets, means for establishing an electric circuit through a selective magnet upon the depression of a corresponding key, a type bar operating device for each type bar, means actuated by a selective magnet, upon the completion of a circuit through it, for moving a corresponding type bar operating device to operative position, a power magnet, an armature `therefor, means operated by said armature for actuating a type bar operating device when the latter has been moved to operative position, a uni'versal magnet energized upon and by the completion of a circuit through any selective magnet, an armature therefor, means operated by said armature for closing a circuit through the power magnet, and means operated upon and by the moving of the power armature toward its magnet for establishing a circuit to cause the `armature of the said universal magnet lo break the circuit for the power magnet. Y

means for energizin a selective magnet upon the depression o a key, a power mag; net, a power ara-rature, type bars adapted to be operatively connected with vthe power armature, means actuated by the selective magnets for operatively connecting a lected type bar with the power armature, an electric switch device, means for energizing and thereby moving the'eleetric switch device in one direction upon the completion of a circuit through. a selective magnet, means actuated by said switch movement for ener- `gizinfr the power magnet, and means for establis iing an independent circuit through the said switch device for maintaining it in its said position independently of the said circuit established through the selective magnet, and means for permitting a return movement of the switch device.
4. In an electrically operated typewriter, the combination of keys, selective magnets, means for energizin a selective magnet upon'the depression 0% a key, a power magnet, a power armature, type bars adapted to be operatively connected with the power armature, means actuated by the selective magn'ets for operatively connecting a selected type bar with the power armature, an electric switch device, means for energizing and thereby moving the electric switch device in one direction upon the completion of a circuit through a selective magnet, means actuated by said switch movement for energizing the power magnet,- and means/actuated by a movement of the power armature toward the Dowcr magnet for establishing a ci rcnit through the switch device for returning it.
5. ln an electrically operated typewriter, the combination of keys, selective magnets,
means for energizing a selective magnet v ,ergizing and thereby moving `the electric switch device in one direction upon the completion oi a circuitl through a selective magnet, means actuated by said switch movement for energizing the power magnet, means actuated by a movement ofthe power .armature toward the power magnet for establishing a circuit through thc switch device for returning it, and means actuated by a return movement-of the switch device and upon the continuance of a circuit through/a selective magnet, for establishing a circuit through the switch device tendingl to hold same against further movement.

7. In an electrically operated typewriter, the combination of keys, selective magnets, means for energizing a selective magnet upon the depression of a key, a power magnet, a power armature, type bars adapted to be operatively connected with the lpower armature, means actuated by the selective inagnets for operatively connecting a selected type bar with the power armature, a movable switch, two electromagnets, each capable of moving the switch in a diii'erent direction, means actuated by a circuit through a selective magnet for moving said switch toward one of said electromagnets, means actuated upon said switch movement for establishing an independent circuit through the power magnet, means' operated upon a movement of the power armature for establishing circuits through said electromagnets tending to move the switch toward the other one of said magnets and means actuated by said latter movement of the switch for establishing a circuit through one of said electromagnets tending to hold it in said position until the 4member, means for yiel ing original circuit established through the se! lective magnet has been broken.
8. In an electrically operated typewriter, the combination of keys, selective magnets, means for energizing a selective magnet .upon the depression of a key, a power magnet, a power armature, type bars adapted to be operatively connected with the power armature, means actuated bythe selective magnets for operatively connecting a selected type bar with the power armature, and a switch device comprising a movable switch membermeans for yieldingly holdin it in a neutral position, two electromagnets or said movable switch member, one for holding the switch member in its operative positidn and the other :for returning it to an inoperative position, means actuated upon the completion of a circuit through a selective magnet for energizing both of said switch magnets, the means for energizing the said o erative switch magnet being eater than t e other means, means actua upon a movement of the movable switch member toward the operative magnet for establishing an independent 'circuit through the power magnet, a` sec'- ond means operated upon said movementof the switch member for establishing an independent circuit throu h the operative switch magnet to thereb hofd the switch magnet in position in caset le circuit through the selec-, tive magnet is broken, means' actuated uponaV movement of the power amature for establishing an independent circuit through the said operative magnet in a di on tendin to neutralize' the other clcuita A, throug this magnet and at the same time to establish an independent circuit through the switch 'returning magnet tendn 'to move the movable `switch member to'wa the switch returning magnet, and a contact device carried by Said movablewitch' member for completing a seeond circuit through the switch returning magnet, said eireuit being energized by the circuit through a selective magnet for holding the said switch n'iember in an ino erative position as long as a circuit is established through a selective magnet, for the purposes stated.

In an electrically operated typewriter, the combination of keys, type bars, selectivo magnets, means for establishing an electric circuit through a selective magnet upon the depression of a corresponding key, a type bar operating device for each type bar, means actuated by a seleetive magnet, upon the completion ot' a eireuit through it, for moving a corresponding type bar operating device to operative position, a power magnet, an armature therefor, means operated by said armature for actuating a type bar operating.,r device when the latteehas been moved to operative position. means opratd upon the making of an electrical Contact' at a key for energizing the power magnet, and means operated upon the making of an eleetrieal` contact hy the power magnet for breaking the circuit, ol said magnet. i

In an electrically operated typewriter having means operatively connected with the keys for movingr type bar devices to position to be operated and also having a power magnet for moving a selected type bar device to printing position, the combination of a circuit closing and opening device also operatively connected with the keys, said device being provided with circuits and having means for closing the circuit of Vthe power magnet, and means' operated upon the movement of the armature of the power magnet caused by closing the power magnet circuit for ai'ecting the circuits of the circuit closing and opening device so as to cause it to break the circuit of i the power magnet.
