Description

G. WORDINGHAMV SHIRT WAIST AND SKIRT HANGER. APPLICATION FILEDNOV. 7. 1917.
Patented June 4, 1918.
1 yieldably supportthe shirtwaist so that at at its extremities may be varied as found most desirable and it will now be seen that when a shirtwaist is placed upon the hanger, as shown in Fig. 1, the free extremities of the strip will extend beneath the shoulders of the shirtwaist and present a relatively broad bearing area thereto. Consequently, the shoulder strip will hold the shoulders of the shirtwaist away from'the upper edges of the arms 12 to prevent creasing of the shirtwaist at the said shoulders as Well as tend to retain the shirtwaist in shape. The weight of the shirtwaist will, of course, flex the extremities of the shoulder strip downwardly to engage the upper edges of the arms 12 of the hanger body which will then sustain the said strip at its ends to support the shirtwaist. In this connection, it will be noted that normally the, extremities of the shoulder strip will extend away from the upper edges of the arms 12 between the sides of the hump 11 and the outer ends of the arms. Consequently, the portions of the strip 1.5 between the hump 11 and outer ends of the arms 12 will be supported by the said arms to yieldabl sustain the shoulders of the shirtwaist. oreover, the extremities of the strip, in being flexed toward the arms,
of the hanger body, will further tend to no time will the shirtwaist be permitted to drape over any rigid edges to consequently crease the shirtwaist at the shoulders thereof.
Associated with the hanger body is a double ended suspension device 17 therefor. This suspension device is preferably provided with a relatively long shank 18, at the outer end of which is formed a small hook 19. The hook 19 is, as particularly shown in Fig. 2, provided with a contracted throat from WlllCh' the bill of the hook is deflected laterally for easy engagement through a suitable opening formed in the hump 11 of the hanger body adjacent the upper edge thereof. lhe hanger body with a shirtwaist and skirt arranged thereon may thus be readily hung in any convenient place desired and in this connection, it is to be noted that the hook 17 will, when en aged with the hanger body, prevent accidental displacement of the shoulder strip 15. Furthermore, it is to be noted that when the hook is thus engaged with the hanger body, the portion of the hum 11 between the openin 20 and the upper e ge of the said hump wi 1 lie within the reduced .throat of the hook 19 to prevent undue lateral swing of the hanger body upon the said hook and tend to steady the hanger body when suspended by the hook. Since the suspension dev1ce is formed with a relatively long shank, the hook bill at the upper end of the said shank will not interfere with the neck of a shirtwaist upon the hanger body.
m will now be readily seen in view of.
the previous description, my improved shirtbe employed for suspending the shirtwaist,
and skirt upon the hanger body and upon the delivery of the articles, the hook may then be detached, when the owner may then sus-- pend the shirtwaist and skirt within a closet or like place by means of the opening 20 .in the hanger body. Thus a laundry or other like plant using my improved type of shirtwaist hanger may purchase any required quantity of the hanger bodies 10 and shoulder strips 15, but only so many of the hooks as will be found necessary to support such of the hanger bodies as are used in the laundry and in delivering the articles of clothing cleaned since, by making the hooks detachable, the said hooks may be used over and over again. Also, in this connection, it is to be noted that the hanger body may be used without the shoulder strip 15. (louse-- quently, inany instance where a laundryman should feel financially unable to purchase the said strips, the hanger bodies may,
nevertheless, be sold independently thereof.
I therefore provide an arrangement 'whereby the several elements of the hanger may be introduced to the trade independently of each other.
7 Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. A device of the character described in.-
ump, and a shoulder strip slotted to receive said hump and supported thereby to overlie the said arms. v
2. A device of the character described ineluding a hanger body provided with supporting arms and formed medially with a hump, and a resilient shoulder strip having the hump fitting therethrough and suported by the bump in position with the co extremities of the said strip. normally extend movably engaging through said opening, the
bill of the sald hook being deflected at its outer extremity for, insertion through the opening and the hook being provided with a reduced throat to receive the portion of the eluding a {hanger body provided with sup-.

aaeaere 5 rigidly-supported thereon above the arms with its extremities overlying the said arms in spaced relation thereto and adapted to be fixed to rest against the said arms' 5. A device of the character described including a hanger body provided with supporting arms and formed medially with a hump; a hump to overlie the said arms, and a suspension device connected with the .hump above the said stri nd preventing accidental displacement of the strip from said hump.
In testimony whereof I a m signature.
