To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOSEPH E. BYRD, a

citizen of the United States, residing at Mount Olive, in the county of Wayne and State of North Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Recep tacles, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to certain improvements in receptacles and has relation more particularly to a device of this general character especially designed and adapted for use in gathering fruit, vegetables or the like and it is an object of the invention to provide a novel and improved receptacle wherein a swinging or pivoted bottom is employed so that the contents of the bucket may be readily and conveniently discharged without the possibility of the contents of the receptacle being bruised or otherwise injured during the discharging operation.

It is also an object of the invention to provide a device of this general character having novel and improved means whereby the swinging or pivoted bottom may be readily and conveniently maintained in closed position during a gathering operation and wherein said means serves as a support ing means for the receptacle.

The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved receptacle wherein certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.

The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.

In order that my invention may be the better understood I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings wherein:

Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of a receptacle constructed in accordance: with an embodiment of my invention;

Fig. 2 is a view in rear elevation of my improved receptacle as herein disclosed; and

Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view thereof.

As disclosed in the accompanying drawings my improved receptacle comprises the body B having a side or wall 1 flat while the remaining portion of the receptacle is curved. in cro s section. The oppo ite e dportions of the body B are open and coactmg with the lower open end of the body B is the bottom 2 which is adapted to snugly within the lower portion of the body B with the under face thereof substantially flush with the lower end of the body B. The bottom 2 is hingedly connected as at 3 with the lower marginal portion of the flat wall 1. Disposed across the outer face of the bottom 2 and substantially in parallelism with the straight wall or face 1 of the body B is a rod 4 held to the bottom 2 through the medium of the staples 5 or other suitable fastening members. The opposite end portions of the rod 4 extend beyond the sides of the body B and terminate in the upwardly directed right angular extensions 6. The free end portions of the extensions 6 are formed with the eyes 7 with which are interlocked the eyes 8 carried by the lower end portions of the side arms 9 of the supporting member or bail S.

The rod 4: is arranged substantially midway of the bottom 2 and the side arms 9 of the supporting member or bail S are loosely directed through the staples 10 or other suitable guide members extending laterally from the upper portion of the body B and arranged in a plane midway between the flat wall 1 and the rod at so that a proper balance of the body B is effected especially when the receptacle is filled. The upper marginal portion of the straight wall 1 of the body B is provided with the upstanding loop or hand grasp 11.

My improved receptacle as herein embodied is especially adapted for use in the gathering of fruits, vegetables or the like and after the receptacle has been filled the same is carried by the supporting member or bail S to any desired location to be emptied. It will be at once self evident that the weight of the body B will serve to maintain the bottom 2 in closed adjustment. In emptying the receptacle it is only necessary that the operator take hold of the loop or hand grasp 11 whereupon the weight of the contents of the receptacle will result in the bottom 2 assuming an inclined position so that the contents of the receptacle may be discharged therefrom with the possibility of said contents being bruised or otherwise injured substantially eliminated. It will be further understood that the bottom 1 when in its inc l-ined positi n will serve as shuts ov r which the contents of the receptacle will travel so that an abrupt drop of the contents is avoided.

From the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that a receptacle constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly Well adapted for use by reason o'f'the convenience and "facility with which it may be assembled-rand operated and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification WltllOlll? materially departing fromzthe principle and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not-wishito rbelnnderstood as limiting myself 1 to the precise arrangement and for- :mation of the several parts herein i shown iTlIl carrying out my invention in practice except' as hereinafter claimed.

I claim:

1.
