EDWARD G. BERRIMAN, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
SHOULDER-YOKE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 4, 1918.
Application filed June 27, 1917. Serial No. 177,213.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD C. BERRIMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shoulder-Yokes, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is the provision of a device for accurately determining the width of the collar and the slope of the shoulders of the individual.
Other objects and advantages of my invention will be apparent as it is better understood by reference to the following specification when read in connection with the accompanying drawing, illustrating the preferred embodiment thereof, in which- Figure 1"is a plan view of the invention, and
Fig. 2 is an elevation thereof applied to a figure.
The width of the collar and slope of the shoulders of individuals varies widely. Inasmuch as the fit of a garment is most apparent at these points it is essential that the tailor be accurately informed as to size and formation before an attempt is made to 'con' struct a garment to properly fit the figure.
Referring to the drawing, 5 and 6 indi-" cate curved arms adapted to embrace the collar. The arms 5 and 6 are provided with rearwardly projecting portions 7 and 8, the
portion 7 having pins 9 disposed in suitable openings in the rearwardly projecting portion 8 serving as guides to maintain the arms 5 and 6 in proper alinement. The screw 10 having operating means 11 is threadedly mounted in the rearwardly projecting portion 8 and extends through an opening in the rearwardly projecting portion 7 a shoulder 12 being provided adjacent the operating means 11 to bear against the rearwardly projecting portion 7 Obviously, as the screw 10 is rotated the arms 5 and 6 will be moved relatively toward and from each other and may be thereby adjusted to fit snugly about the collar of the individual being measured.
Laterally projecting wings Band 14 are secured to the arms 5 and 6 and are adapted to extend over the shoulders of the individual as indicated in Fig. 2 of the drawing. Mounted in the wings 13 and 14 are a plurality .of pins 15 adapted to be separatelyv adjusted to engage their ends with accordingly I have provided aspi'rit-level 16 secured to the arm 5, although obviously it may be otherwise disposed so long as it informs the operator when the wings 13 and 14 are level.
The mode of using my invention will be apparent from an inspection of Fig. 2 of the drawing. The arms 5 and 6 are disposed about the collar and the screw 16 is operated until the arms engage the collar lightly. The pins 15 may then be adjusted in their openings until their ends touch the shoulders of the individual being measured, care being taken that at the conclusion of the .operation the wings 13 and 14 remain level as indicated by the spirit level 16. The pins are secured in adjusted position so that they will remain set when the device is delivered to the tailor. The device will indicate to the tailor the width of the collar and the formation of the shoulders so that a form of similar size and formation may be constructed or a pattern may be out in accordance therewith.
It will be apparent that various changes may be made in the form, construction and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention or sacrificing any of its material advantages, the form hereinbefore described being merely a preferred embodiment thereof.
I claim:
1. In a device of the character described, the combination of a pair of rounded arms adapted to partially surround the collar of an individual, and means for relatively adjusting said arms to determine the width of the collar, including parallel projecting portions on said arms, guiding pins on one of said portions projecting into openings in the other and a screw connecting said portions.
2. In a device of the character described, the combination of a pair of rounded arms adapted to partially surround the collar of an individual, means for relatively adjusting said arms to determine the width of the collar, laterally projecting Wings secured to said arms, and means on said Wings movable into engagement With the shoulders of the individual to indicate the slope thereof.
3. In a device of the character described, the combination of apair of rounded arms adapted to partially surround the collar of an individual, means for relatively adjusting said arms to determine the Width of the collar, laterally projecting wings secured to said arms, means on said wings movable into engagement With the shoulders of the individual to indicate the slope thereof, and a spirit level secured to said device, so as to indicate when the Wings are horizontal.
4. In a device of the character described, the combination of means adapted to rest ,on the shoulders of an individual and e1nbracingthe'collar, laterally projecting Wings sewith the shoulders of the individual to in dicate the slope thereof, and a spirit level secured to said device, so as to indicate when the Wings are horizontal.
5. In a device of the character described, the combination of a pair of curved arms adapted to embrace the collar of an indi- EDlVARD C. BERRIMAN.
