BINDINGDEVICE FOR MOLDS, &C.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patinied May 28,1918.
Application filed August 17, 1916. Serial No. 115,491.
the means employed forconnecting the parts of. the mold or casing together to receive the concrete.
In concrete work of this kind it is customary to construct the mold or casing of several parts which are fitted together and connected usually by means of metal binding strapsv or bands drawn tightly around the mold, the; ends of said binding strap or band being securely held in locked `engagement `with a clamping device or keeper, whereby after the concrete'has been poured and becomes set the parts of the mold may be unbound, separated and removed.
rrllhe clamping devices or keepers heretofore usedl in this connection require one or both ends of the strapto be specially formed, and in some instances the implement for drawing the band taut about the mold remains as a permanent part of the holding device or keeper.
The primary object of my invention is to provide an inexpensive sheet metal device to primarily hold the respective ends of the band or binding strap by frictional engagement and adapted for use in connection with a pulling implement for drawing the band or strap tightly around the mold; all as hereinafter fully described and specifically set forth in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification:
Figure 1 is a front elevation illustrating the application of my invention in connec tionwith a mold for forming a concrete column.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view through the front portion of the mold to show a side view of the sheet metal clamping device or keeper.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional viewl through the'clamping device or keeper and showing the application of the pulling implement.
Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view through the clamping device or keeper, on the line 1- 4 of Fig. 3. x
Like numerals of reference indicatelike parts in all the figures of the drawings. y
In the drawings I have illustrated my invention as applied for the 'purpose ofV connecting together the parts of a mold used in forming a concrete supporting column, but it will be understood, of course, that the devices hereinafter particularly described may be conveniently employed inother situations wherever it is desired to clamp and hold a metal bander strap about a structure of any kind. 'In the presentinstance, however, I have shown the mold as consisting of four sides, 7, each provided with a projecting rib, 7a, to form a continuous curved surface to facilitate the operation of drawing or binding the strap or band 8 around the mold, several sets of ribs being used and spaced a short distance apart to provide a strong and substantial mold structure. 0n the other hand, vwhen the devices are used in connection with a round mold or structure the projecting ribs will be unnecessary inasmuch as the parts of the mold when assembled will present a round contour.
The keeper device is preferably made from a sheet metal plate stamped orv otherwise formed U-shape in cross-section to present a bottom part 9 and opposite lon gitudinal side walls, 10, 10, thewhole structure being slightly curved longitudinally to approximate the` curve of the surface with which it is` adapted to be used. Mounted between the side walls at one end of the device is a cam 1l, having gudgeonsfl?l and 13 wiorking in apertures therefor in the side pieces and disposed with reference to the bottom of the keeper so that the cam may clamp an end of the binding strap or band between it and said bottom, and in order to insure an effective grip the engaging surfaces of both the cam and bottom of the lkeeper are preferably roughened or serrated of the keeper; whereby the greater the pull on the binding strap, in the direction of strain, after it has been tightened around the mold, the more tightly the cam will hold. One of the gudgeons of each cam is squared at its end to receive an ordinary nut-wrench for the purpose vof turning said cam in clamping the'same on the band and releasing it, and in order to limit the throw of the cam inwardly lugs a, 10a are struck from 'the opposite side walls to proj eet in the path of the enlarged portion of said cani. The metal keeper is o'f ysuch length that the cams are spaced a sul'licient distance apart to permit-of the operation therebetween'of a pulling implement, hereinafter described, which is adapted yto fit between the `side pieces or vkwalls 10, 10, and bear in recesses or depressions ''a in the outer edges thereof. n The pulling implement consists of a head or casting 18, of a width slightly less than the space between the side pieces of the lkeeper and having opposite trunni'ons 19 "which seat in the Lrecesses or depressions 1-7,
said head or casting being also provided with projecting ears or lmembers 20, 20, to
Areceive' the other part of the implement, or
From the foregoing description, lin connection with the accompanying drawings, the operation of the device will be readily understood; for after the parts ofthe mold lare assembled `-the band 8 is placed around the same at thecenter of the ali'ningribs v and'one end of the band connected securely the `keeper by'moving the-cam 14 into en- 'forward to obtain aigripon the loose end vof the band near tothe eannand then pulled lrearward to draw upon theband in'tightening the vsame around the vmold. This operation of movinglthe pulling implement forward and backward is repeated until the band is drawn taut, and this end of the band is then securely locked in connection lwith gagementtherewith by the use of a wrench. The =pulling implement is now removed,
Vthe ends of the band being securely connect- 'ed by locked 'engagement with the keeper to vhold the said band tightly and firmly 'bound around the parts 'of the Ymold. Of
course several "bands 'are placed around the 'mold,'being spaced apart the-desired disi tance to provide 'a mold-structure of therequired strength to withstand the pressure of the wet cement mixture or other plastic composition.
If the mold should loosen up from any cause during the pouring of the mixture therein, said mold may be tightened at any point without releasing any of the bands preliminary to the operation of further tightening the same; for in this instance the pulling implement is applied to the loose end of the band Ito be tightened and alfter vsaid implement is fulcrumed in the keeper connection which is simple, cheap and compact in construction. Furthermora-a single pulling implement may be used in connection with any number ofkeepers, and therefore the keepers may besold separately.
As will be noted, the endsof the banddo not have to be specially formed but simply extend under and beyond the cams; andthe pulling implement being reversible with respect to the camsmay be used in connection -with either end'of the said band, permitting the pullingimplement to be=used alternately on first one end and then the other to effect a closer binding together of the parts of the mold.
I purpose making the keeper. plate of sheet steel, and in this instance the serrated p0rtions of the bottom thereof, immediately below the cams, may besuitably hardened to reduce the wear and secure a better hold on the end portions of the binding strap or band. v
By providing the lugs 10ll they limit the throw of the cams so thatthey will'not'interfere with the operation of threading the ends of the band through the keeper device by swinging all tlieway around and en gagn g the bandtoward the end of the keeper.
Though I have described my invention as particularly adapted for the purpose of binding the parts of a mold'together it will be understood, of course, that it may be employed for variousiother purposes; for instance to bind a water tank, cistern, &c.
Having described my invention, I claim:
1. A device for binding molds, '&c.,'eo1nprising a band, a metal keeper for connect- Iing the ends ofthe band, saidkeeperbeing -Ushaped in cross-section andhavingalining apertures in its side walls near the opposite ends thereof, cams rotatably mounted j cams to provide for manually turning the same.

A device for binding molds, &c., comprising a band, a metal keeper U-shape in cross-section, means for connecting the band to one end of said keeper, and a cam rotatably mounted in the other end of said keeper between the side Walls to co-act With a part of said keeper to clamp and hold the other end of the band, an end of the cam projecting beyond the adjacent side Wall to receive a Wrench.
3. A device for binding molds, &c., comprising a band, a metal keeper U-shape in cross-section, means for connecting the band to one end of said keeper, a cam rotatablyv mounted in the other end of said keeper to co-act with a part thereof to clamp and hold the other end of the band and means for tightening the band around the mold.
4. A device for bindin molds &c., comprising a band, a metal eeper -shape in cross-section, means for connecting the band to one end of the keeper, a cam rotatably mounted in the other end of said keeper to co-act With the bottom thereof to clamp and hold the other end of the band, and a lug` projecting from a side Wall of the keeper to limit the throw of the cam in one direction; together with means for tightening the band around the mold.
5. A device for binding molds, &c., comprising a band, a metal keeper U-shape in cross-section, means for connecting the band to one end of the keeper, a cani mounted in the other end of said keeper to co-act With the bottom thereof to clamp and hold the other end of the band, said cam having an end thereof projecting beyond the adjacent side Wall and squared to receive a Wrench,
`and a lug struck from a side Wall of the keeper to limit the throw of the cam in one direction; together With means for tightening the band around the mold.
