BOX-SHOOK-EDGE-TRIMMIN MECHANISM.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE A. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at South Hill, in the county of Mecklenburg and State of Virginia, have invented a new and Improved Box-Shook-Edge-Trimming Mechanism, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention has particular reference to the manufacture of box shooks and particularly to shooks that are cut to the desired predetermined widths by planing machines in which the matcher or cutter heads are set to their operative position by the board being operated on, and which automatically sets the matcher or cutter head or heads to the desired predetermined position, orin other words, if a board say 3 wide is passing to the shiftable cutter head, the latter is automatically set for edge trimming boards of that particular width and, when the boards are say 4 wide, the cutter head is correspondingly set.
In the process of edge trimming board lengths of standard widths, and which are out up into shook lengths, one or both edges of the shock are at times defective, either by reason of bark edges or by irregular or knotty portions.
In the manufacture of certain kinds of boxes, those made up in standard sizes, and whose sides, ends, bottom and top members are made up from a combination of shocks of different widths, for example 3-1;, 311,4, 4%;
F and 4%; inches, more or less, mechanical nailers are utilized for framing up and nailing box sections and in the use of such mechanical nailers, it is necessary that the several box sections be positively uniform and free of knots to meet the requirements of such nailing machines, andiby reason of the said requirements of mechanical nailers, it isnecessary, when cutting up the rough lumber into shooks of different standard widths that they be sufficiently wider than the standard size to allow for a final trimming of the edge or edges thereof without reducing the said board or shook below the said standard widths, for example to allow for the final trimming, the board should be out about t wider than the standard width.

tary disk jointers, an improved means for' supporting the shocks and feeding them edgewise up against the rotary planing disk and by which the operator, without any special consideration of the particular width of the shook handled, can quickly and accurately adjust the feed of the shook, and in which the final feed adjustment is determined by the condition of the board edge being trimmed, visual to the operator as he observes the trimming operation, or in other words, should the edge of the board show defective portions, requiring more than the extra a surplus or defective edge, the operator can set certain rack and latch devices for effecting the desired predetermined forward feed of the shook to the cutting disk, so as to provide for removing the initial or more of the edge being trimmed, no matter how serious the defect of that edge being trimmed, whereby to leave the remaining portion of the shock reduced to a standard width;
Another object of my invention is to provide a shiftable holder or table attachment for standard types of disk jointers of a simple and inexpensive character and which includes ratchet and latch devices controlled by the hand that actuates the feed of the table'on which the shook is held, for governing the final feed movement of the shook edge to the planer disk and governed by the defective character of the edge being trimmed.

As it is usual to build .jointer machines with a cutting diskat each end of a driven shaft, and to provide cooperative, board holding means for each cutting'disk, I have illustrated invention as'applied to each of the oppositely disposed cutting disks, as shown inFig. 1, it being understood, however, that the following detaildescription of the operating parts generallyapplies to the board edgetrlmmmg mechanism atone side only.

-A bed frame 6 that extends across the face of the cutter disk is mounted on the brackets 7-7 and the said frame includes inner and outer parallel longitudinal bars 606O bolted to the brackets 77 and cross bars 6161 bolted to the bar 60, as shown.
By referring to Fig. 3 of the drawing, it will be seen that the innermost bar 60 is positioned closely to the cutting disk and forms, as it were, the shaving bar or chip breaker and for holding the board edge to be trimmed down solid against the said bar 60, as it is being fed up to the cutter, vertically adjustable guides 8S therefor are attached to the brackets 99 mounted one at each end of the said inner bar 60, the said brackets including horizontal arms that have elongated horizontal slots 82 that provide for lateral shifting of the vertically adjustable guides 88 before mentioned.
A pair of spaced cross bars 6263 are mounted on the bars 60-60 midway the length thereof and the said bars 6263 form a guideway for a slide bar 10 movable to and from the cutter disk in the manner and for the purpose presently explained.

Casting 11 is pivotally attached at 14 to the slide bar 10 to swing in the horizontal plane over the frame 6 and the said casting includes a semi-circular outer end provided with a series of annularly arranged notches or apertures 15 for coengaging with a latch pin 16 on an adjusting lever 17 hereinafter again referred to.
As before stated, in the manufacture of standard sizes of shooks, it is essential that their edges be clear of imperfections and that the size be accurate so as to provide for a perfect assembling of the boards when put into box shape and to do this, it is necessary to provide the boards with a surplus width to provide for producing the desired edge finish.
For controlling the edge trimming operation and regulating the edgewise feed of the board or shook, I employ a selective ratchet and pawl mechanism, the construction of which (best shown in Figs. 4 and 5) embodies a ratchetibar 18 that is secured memes upon the under side. of the cross bar 63 with the ratchet facingand in parallelism with the slide bar 10.
In the construction shown, the ratchet teeth are spaced 11; apart and are so assembled, with respect to the cutting disk,
that they form a series of predetermined stops for being engaged by a detent pawl 23 on the lower end of the stem 21 of a hand hold 20 which projects above the pusher casting and which forms the means whereby the slide and the pusher are moved toward and from the disk cutter.

Operation.
and thereby hold the shook from longitudinal creeping as the edge to be trimmed is being projected to the disk cutter, which is done by theoperator grasping the handle 20 and at the same time turning it to bring the latch or detent 23 so it clears the ratchet bar 18 as the board is being fed up to the cutter. 1
In placing the board in position for being fed to the cutter, the operator observes the condition of the edg to be trimmed and assuming the edge to be trimmed to be barked as indicated in Fig. 7, the operator places that face of the board or shook uppermost whose edge shows theleast bark or defect, see Fig. 9.
If the board to be trimmed be 4% wide or less than g," wider than the standard width of 4%, the operator as he grasps the handle 20 to advance the slide 10, at the same time turns the said handle to bring the pawl 23 into engagement with the selective ratchet bar, it being understood that no matter at which point between any adjacent pair of stop edges (ratchet teeth) the pawl engages, the pusher bar will have a forward movement only to that portion or ends of the distance that the pawl can go to meet the next stop, or in other words, stop action on the pusher frame applies only after the said pusher frame has been advanced to the extent of *1 assuming the ratchet teeth are formed on eighths. Thus when these selective devices are arranged as shown, the" prlmary trim of the edge being engaged is till;
said handle to release the pawl from the ratchet bar and holds it free until he notices that the board being trimmed has about reached the limit of the maximum line of defection, see 7 Fig. 8, and as he thus notices the board, he turns the handle to bring the pawl 23 to engage with stop ratchet that may be in line with the pawl, the latter traveling as the handle and slide are pushed forward the final distance of the stop ratchet with which it engages and thereby effects the secondarytrim of t". Thus a defective edge board originally cut for a standard width of 43; is edge trimmed clear of defects down to the next standard size of 4%. i I
It should be stated that in trimming the defective board edge, the defective edge is trimmed down to the standard width measured on the upper surface since a bark edge on the under or inner face is ordinarily of no consequence as that edge is placed on the inside when two boards are edgewise matched and held to be stapled to form a box side, end ortop, see Fig. 11.
In handling box shocks, the character of the board, owing to bark edges or knots, is often such that to get the full value of the shook, it must be ripped up into a bias shape, it being understood that when out bias, two boards of like angle (the bias edges) are matched up to form a box side, end or top.
In my invention, I- have provided for trimming the bias or tapered edge of the boards so the said tapered edge may be planed alongpredetermined lines, or in other words, the said bias edge is held in parallelism with and advanced to the cutter disks the same asis done with a straight edge board. a
For such purpose, the adjusting lever 17 before referred to has a fixed fulcrum 25 on the pusher 11 and also has a' slidable ful- V crum pin 26 that works through a segmental slot 27 in the pusher 11, curved about the,

It should be here stated that in my con-, struction of shock edge trimmer, thecutter disk is held in a relatively fixed position.

One of the advantages in taking care of defective edge boards or shocks in the man ner shown and described is 'that it"saves the time in throwing aside a defective board and handling it again for a resaw to reduce it to a lower standard width.
My method of handling and trimming box shocks saves asserting the different widths, facilitates the trimming operation and avoids the use of more or less complicated mechanism necessary when edge trimming with a matcher head cutter or planer.
In the use of my invention no skill is required of the operator, since no special se-' lection of the shooks'that are furnished him isrequired and no setting or adjusting of parts for, controlling the selected points at which the advance of'the board to the cutter should stop.
In taking up theshook, the operator places the defective edge on the pusher frame, with the maximum defective po-rtion at the bottom and in grasping the handle 20 gives I it turn to swing the pawl 23 out of the- 66'wardly. and a selective stop device cooper-a:

What I- claim is:
1. In aboard edge trimming machine, the combination with an edge planer; of-means for holding the board to be trimmed at right:

3. The combination with a planer, the tableand the board feeding slide; of a selective stop device for arresting the forward movement of the slide and a device by which, when applied in one direction, the slide is moved to feed the board and when applied in another direction, the selective stop device operates to arrest the said forward movement of the slide.
4. The combination with a planer, the table and the board feeding slide, a selective stop device for arresting the forward movements of the slide and a member co'eperative with the slide and the selective stop device and adapted for substantially simultaneously advancing the slide and setting the stop device.
5. In a box shook edge trimming machine, an edge trimming cutter, means for holding the board to be edge trimmed and advancing it to the cutter, the said means including a board pusher having a fence edge and devices for adjusting the pusher to bring the fence edge at difi'erent angles whereby to set straight edges or bias edges of the board to be trimmed in parallelism with the cutter as the board is being trimmed.
6.- The combination with a cutter; of a slide member movable in a plane at right angles to the cutter, a pusher frame pivotally mounted on the slide member for adjustment laterally With respect to the slide and in the horizontal plane, a handle by which the slide and pusher are advanced, and a selective stop device cooperative with the said handle for arresting the movement "said handle for arresting the movement of the slide member and the pusher, means mounted on the, pusher and cooperative with the slide for shifting and holding the said pusher to different lateral adjustments, whereby to present the board engaging face of the pusher at different angles with respect to the I cutter.

The combination" with a cutter; of aslide member movable in aplane at right angles tothe cutter,-a pusher frame pivotally mounted on the slidemember for adjustment laterally with respect to the slide and-- in the horizontal plane, a handle by which the slide'and pusher are advanced and a selective device cooperative with the said handle for directing the movement of the slide member and the pusher, means mounted on the pusher and cooperative with the slide for shifting and holding the said pusher to different lateral adjustments, whereby to present the board engaging face of the pusher at different angles with respect to the cutter, said means including a detent, a lever that carries the detent having a fixed fulcrum on the pusher frame and a slidable fulcrum connection With the slide, the said pusher frame having annularly arranged detent locking portions.
9. In a board edge trimming mechanism, a rotary cutter disk, means for holding the board to be edge trimmed at right angles to the disk, the said means including inner and outer longitudinal bars, the inner one being held close to the cutter disk, transverse bars that connect the longitudinal bars, two of the said transverse bars forming a transprovide for predetermined graduated feed movements of the slide and the pusher.
10. In a mechanism of the character stated, a rotary cutter disk, means for holding the board to be trimmed at right angles to the disk, means for gradually advancing the board edgewise toward the disk, further means for determining the time operations of the said board advancing means including a rotatable hand hold and a detent on the hand hold that cooperates With the means for determining the time operations of the board advancing mechanism.
