Description

A, M. -YE.
Improvementin Vaginal-Syringes.
Witnesses the machine is in use.
UNITED STATES ALEXANDER ll/I.` DYE, OF ELKHART CITY, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN VAGINAL SVRlNvGE-S.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 126,791, dated May 14, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, ALEXANDER M. DYE, of
. Elkhart Gity, in the county of Logan and in act description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a combined vaginal syringe, digital, and insufliator, which can be used for liquids, powders, or gaseous substances used as anaesth etics, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a side view, and Fig. 2, a longitudinal vertical section of my combined instrument.
A A represent two rubber blades made concave, as shown, and hinged together at a, so that when closed they will form a tube of suit able length closed at the outer end. From the base or the hin ge point of each blade extends a handle, B, said handles being made to it a rubber bulb, C, which is insertedbetween them, and by its pressure holds the blades closed. From this bulb G a nozzle, D, extends up a suitable distance between the bladesAA, and passes through a cup or socket,E, attached in the concavity of one of the blades. The extreme end of the nozzle may be provided with screw-threads and a nut placed on the same to prevent the bulb from Working out while It can readily be removed when necessary for cleaning or for other purposes. The inner sides of the blades may be lined with metal at the hin ges where the greatest strain will be, the hin ges being formed in said metal lining, and the rivets passing through both the lining and the blades.
This instrument can be used for injecting either liquids or powdered substances, at the same time dilating the parts so as to get the substances used in contact with the largest portion ot'surface; and when the instrument is made perfect so that the blades form a perfect joint, it will be self-closing, and will absorb the substance back, and will not allow it to come in contact with sound parts.
Many times it is more convenient and of greater utility to use powdered substances, and in this case the material need not enter the ball, but can be placed in the concave portions ofthe blades and used by insufiiation.
A sponge, G, placed in the blades and held by a pin or'hook, b, or the socket E may be used as the receptacle for the materials to be injected, instead of having them enter the bulb of the syringe.
The instrument can also be used as a digital for the removal of foreign substances from the vagina or uterus, the suction assisting the removal, and the ball graduating the degree of force in all cases, which is very essential, so as not to, in the least, produce any injury. Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination, in a vaginal syringe, of the two sections A B A B, each made of one piece, forming a tube with a closed end, and handles with the bulb C, and nozzle D with or without socket E, all substantially as set forth.
In testimony' that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 2d day of December, 1871.
ALEX. M. DYE.
