Description
JOHN DU BOIS, on xrnesromnnw YORK.
IMPROVEMENT lN flF'l'H-WHE ELS FI'OR VEHICLES. I
Specification forming'part of Letters Patent No. 126,790, dated May 14, 1872.
Specification describing a certain Improve ment in Fifth -Wheels or Wagon -Gircles, invented by JOHN DU BOIS, of Kingston, county of Ulster and State of New York.
Figure 1 is a plan view of my invention exhibiting it as being applied to the runninggear of a vehicle; and Fig. ,2 is a vertical central section of the same and the front axle, and a side view of one of the reaches of said running-gear.
Similar letters of reference in the two figures refer to corresponding" parts.
This invention refers to an improvement in fifth-wheels, otherwise termed wagon-circles; and it consists of the combination, with the parts of the circle-iron of a fifth-wheel, of a clip or loop attached toa bar, through the front end of which passes the king-bolt, substantially as hereinafter more fully described and pointed out by the claim.
To enable others to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe it.
In the accompanying drawing, A A refer to the two parts of which the circle-iron is composed, the lower one of which is fastened to the axle O in the ordinary manner, which is plainly shown in Fig. 2, the upper one thereof being held upon the said lower part in the manner to be hereinafter explained. B desigbe seen, isso arranged with the Ian gitndinal bar clipa The upper end of one of its vertical portions is formed with or otherwise fastened tothe outer or rear end of the bar B, while its opposite extremity is left free. This clip is made to embrace the two parts A A of the circleiron of the fifth -wheel and to retain them therein by means 'of a bolt which can be removed therefrom by taking off its nut in case it is desired to displace them. This bolt passes through the upper portions of the said clip or loop, and also through an opening or eye made in the upper part of the circle-iron, as plainly illustrated in Fig. 2.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a fifth -wheel, the bar B, having its front end fastened to the front axle and supplied with a loop embracing and bolted to the circle-iron A A, substantially as shown and for the purpose described.-
2. A fifth-wheel, consisting'of the bar B, b,
and b, the circle-iron A A, and a screw-bolt,
substantially as and for the purpose specified. In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name this 26th day of February, A. D. 1872, in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
