Description
UNITED STATES ATENE OEEIOE.
WILLIAM H. CROSBY, OF PARISH, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN CORN-PLANTERS.
Specication describing an Improved Corn- P1anter,'invented by WILLIAM H. CROSBY, of Parish, in the county of Oswego and State of New York.
The invention relates .to that class of cornplanters where two rows are planted .simultaneously; and it consists in the improvements hereinafter described, in connection with all that is necessary to a full understanding thereof, and subsequently pointed ont in the claim. I Figure l is a top view. Fig. 2 is a side view. Fig. 3 is a detail view. l
A represents the double planter, having the pole B pivote-d to axle. C G are frames for the hoppers D D, the slides E E, and their operative mechanism. Beneath the hopper are deliveryspouts and opening and covering plows, constructed and arranged in the usual manner. Each slide E is operated by a train of mechanism, consisting of spring-retracted lever e, a lever, e2, and connecting-link el. The lever e2 is operated by a projection On the sliding clutch-sleeve F. This sleeve and the boss of the wheel G are correspondingly ratcheted. The sleeve F is also provided with a spring, f, which throws it into gear with the wheel by which it is revolved. J is a lever, bifurcated at the end and embracing an annular depression in the sleeve F.` By pressing this lever forward the sleeve is thrown out of connection with wheel and the seeders cease to drop. This is done at the end of each row 4while the machine is being turned around. The two frames G O are independent of each other, and
are intended to be raised separately to regu- 'late the depth of planting, or when either encounters an obstacle which impedes its progress. The means by which this is eliected consist of the caster-wheels K having standards k, which pass up through the frames, and which are provided with the levers k1, pivoted on the top thereof. These levers have grooved cams k2, over which are placed cords or chains k3, connected with the ends of plates c. By this means the frame is caused to slide upon the standards k when the Opening-plow is intended to run shallow, and vice versa. L is a rod, which rests at each end in a slotted plate,
c, and forms a rest for support-ing the pivoted axle, while itis provided with a middle guide- 'Vfra1ne, l, which prevents lateral movement, but
allows vertical play in backing or turning.v
These devices render a double seeder very convenient, and allow the seed to be planted with great uniformity.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The frames C C, independent-ly pivoted to axle, pivoted in front to rod L, and supported b v caster-wheels K K, in combination with tongue B, as described, so as to allow said frames to rise separately when in contact with obstructions.
