To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, LEVI L. HEIZER, a

.citizen of the United States, residing at Nichols, in the county of Muscatine and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Marking Attachments for Corn-Planters; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains, to make and use the same.

My invention relates to improvements in marking devices for corn planters and the like and the principal object is to so improve upon the construction and mounting of such markers as to permit them to be readily swung to either side of the machine without interfering in any manner with other parts. I

A still further object of the invention is to provide novel means whereby the marker may be easily attached and detached whenever required.

WVith the foregoing general objects in view, the invention resides in the novel features of construction and unique combinations of parts to be hereinafter fully described and claimed, the descriptive matter being supplemented by the accompanying drawings which form a part of this specification and in which:

In the drawings above briefly described, the numeral l'has reference to a suitable bracket which is secured by clips or the like 2, to the rear end of a corn planter frame, said bracket being by preference formed of a single metal bar whose intermediate portion is bowed rearwardly as indicated at 3 to serve as a pivotal mounting for a clamp or the like 4 by means of which the usual marking rod 5 is connected to the machine, the outer end of said rod. having a marking disk or any other preferred type of marking instrument as indicated at 6. Heretofore, difiiculty has been experienced when shifting the marking rod 5 from one side of the machine to the other,

and the means heretofore provided for at-' taching and detaching the marker has in most cases included a number of parts which rod 11 having one end were easily lost when detached. Due to. the nature of the presentinvention, however, there are no loose parts which may be misplaced, and the marker may be freely swung from side to side as occasion may demand. I r In detachably connecting the clamp 4 to the bracket 1, said clamp is provided with a pivot pin 7 which passes through alined openings in the portion 3 of said bracket and in a cross bar 8 which extends across said portion, said pin having a transverse notch 9 in which a, latch 10 is receivable, said latch being pivoted to the bar 8 or to any other preferred part of the device, so that there is no danger whatever of losing the same. l/Vhen the latch 10 is in operative position, the pin 7 may not be removed, but when detachment of said pin is necessary,

.raising of the latch 10 will permit such detachment.

Positioned in a plane in advance of the clamp 4, is a transversely disposed arched anchored in an eye 12 on one end of the bracket 1, whereas the other end of said rod is detachably received in a hook-like keeper 13 carried by the other end of the bracket, said last named end of the rod being provided with stops 1% above and below the keeper to hold it against vertical movement. Similar stops 15 are provided above and below the eye 12' to prevent shifting of the arched rod 11 yet at the same time to permit a pivotal movement thereof when it is disengaged from the keeper 13. The rod 11 receives thereon an elongated guide 16 which is connected loosely with the inner end of a brace rod 17, the outer end of this rod being secured in any preferred manner, as by a clamp 18, to the marking rod 5, so that the latter will be braced against rearward swinging. It will be observed that the loose connection between the guide 16 and the rod 17 will prevent possible bending of the latter when backing the planter whenever required.

By the features of construction above .described, whenever the marking-rod 5 is ated to release the pivot pin 7, whereupon merly removed parts, is simply a reversal of the removal operation as will be readily understood.

From the foregoing, taken-in connection with the accompanying drawings, it will be obvious that although the device is of comparatively simple and inexpensive construction, it will be highly efiicient and durable for the purposes intended. Furthermore, the attachment may be employed in connection with numerous types of planters and it will be obvious that numerous minor details of construction may be varied to meet the requirements.

I claim:-

1. In a marking attachment for planters, the combination of a marking rod and means for pivoting it to the planter for swinging to either side thereof, a brace for said'rod having a guide, an arched rod on which said guide is slidable, means foranchoring one end of said rod to the planter, a laterally opening hook to detachably connect the other end of said rod with the planter, means for securing said hook to said planter, and shoulders on said rod aboveand below said hook.

2. In combination with a marking attachment for a planter, a bracket comprising a horizontal bar having its intermediate portion bowed laterally, means for securing the ends of said bar to the rear end of the planter frame, a marker pivotally mounted on said rearwardly bowed portion of said bar, a brace for said marker having at its inner end a guide, an arched rod upon which said guideis mounted slidably, one end of said rod beinganchored' to one end of said bar, and a hook-like keeper formed on the other end of said bar for detachably receiving the remaining end of said rod, said guide being removable from said rod when the last named end thereof is disengaged from said seat.

3. In combination with a marking attachment for a planter, a bracket comprising a horizontal bar having its intermediate portion bowed laterally, means for securing the ends of said bar to the rear end of the Copies of. this patent rod secured to said bracket and a brace for said marker having a guide mounted on said arched rod for movement along the same when the marker 1S reversed.

4c. In combination with a marking attachment for a planter, a bracket comprising a horizontal bar having its intermediate portion bowed laterally, means for securing the ends of said bar to the rear end of the planter frame, a brace rod disposed between the outwardly bowed arms of. said bracket, said brace bar and said bracket being provided with alined apertures, a marker having one end pivotally mounted between the arms of the frame provided with a pivot pin extending through said apertures, a pivoted catch on said brace bar for engaging the inner ends of said pivot pin thereby locking the marker to the planter, a brace for said marker having at its inner end a guide, an arched rod upon which said guide is slidably mounted, one side ofsaid rod being anchored to one end of said bar and a hook like keeper formedon the other end of said bar for detachably' connecting the remaining ends of said rod, said guide being removable from said rod when said last mentioned end is disengaged from said seat.

5. In a marking attachment for corn planters, the combination of a marking rod and means for pivoting it to the planter for swinging to either side thereof, a brace for said rod having a guide, an arched rodon which said guide is slidable, an eye in which one end of said rod is received for horizontal swinging and means for securing said eye to the planter frame, an inwardly opening hook into which the other end of said rod is sprung and held by the resiliency of said rod. means for securing said hook to 11( the planter frame, and shoulders on said rod above and below said hook.
