Description

NATHAN P RIDER.
Earth-Cfoset.
Patented May14,1872.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
NATHAN P. RIDER, OF MANDEVILLE, LOUISIANA.
IMPROVEMENT IN EARTH-CLOSTS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NATHAN P. RIDER, of Mandeville, in the parish of St. Tammany and State of Louisiana, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Earth-Closets; and I do hereby declare th at the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the con struction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing making a part of this specification, and to the letters and iigures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawing is a representation of a plan view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical central section on line an Fig. 3 is a vertical central section on line Y Y.
This invention has relation. to earth-closets and the novelty consists in providing an earthcloset with a concave bowl, made in two sections, hinged to the closet-lid, and adapted to be spread apart or opened, when the closet is used, by the weight of a person pressing down a hinged rim. This invention also consists in the construction and novel arrangement of devices operating automatically to close the bowl after the weight is removed, so as to prevent the escape of efiluvia; and in the construction and novel arrangement of a device which operates in connection with the bowl, and is adapted to allow a small quantity of earth to fall upon and cover each deposit as soon as the bowl closes. v
`In the accompanying drawing illustrating l this invention, A represents the cover or seat of an earth-closet or privy, having a circular aperture, B, within which ts a anged rim, C, hinged at its back part to the seat A. D designates a concave bowl, made in two quarto-spherical parts, which are hinged to the under side of the seat A. At the upper part, and near the hinge of each section of the bowl D is a lid, d, upon which the flanged rim (l rests. When a person is seated on the rim C the pressure against the lids d throws the sections ofthe bowl far apart, and allows the deposit to ,pass through to its proper receptacle. From the outer edge of each section of the bowl a hook-shaped projection, E, depends. Upon these projections rest the ends of springs l?, which are secured to the under side of the seat, and serve to force the sections of the bowl back to their original positions after the weight is released. Other weight besides that of the person using the closet may be employed to operate the bowl. Behind the bowl an opening, a, is cut in the seat A, communicating with the box which contains the earth to be dropped on each deposit. Within this vopening is hinged a concave cup, G, connected with which is a weight-ed plate, H, arranged to lie between the bowl and the seat. The ends g of said cup project slightly beyond the sides of the same, and are beveled as shown. A bent plate, I, is hinged to the under side of the seat A, and when the bowl is closed is held against the beveled ends of the cup G by means of a spring, J, arranged as shown in the drawing. An opening, K, being left at the-mouth of the cup so as to allow the earth or deodorizing substance to pass through.
As soon as the bowl is opened the plate I, being pressed against the beveled ends of the cup G, raises the back part of it and makes an opening, through which a portion of the contents of the earth-box will pass to fill the cup. When the bowl closes the weighted plate H is raised, closing the4 back part, and opening the mouth of the cup, allowing the contents to fall on the deposit below.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In earth-closets the hinged cup G, having the beveled ends g, or their equivalents,
in combination with the spring-plate I, the plate H, and the bowl D, as and for the purpose specified. v A
2. The earth-depositin g cup G hinged to the seat A, and provided with the weighted plate or arm H, in combination with the plate I and spring J, substantially as specied.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
NATHAN P. RIDER. Witnesses:
