To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HENRY P. COULTER, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Toledo, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio, have. invented a certain new and useful Dust and Wind Guard for Car-VVindows; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and eXact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates to railway appliances, and particularly to a dust and windguard for use in connection with the windows of railway cars.

The object of my invention is the provision of an improved device of the character described, which is permanently attached to a car, can be easily and quickly placed in operative or usable position, and, When not in use, may be disposed out of View within the window-casing and adjacent car wall.

The invention is fully described in the following specification, and while, in its broader aspect, it is capable of embodiment in numerous forms, a preferred embodiment thereof is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a portion of a railway passenger coach embodying the invention, with a part broken away, and Fig. 2 is a similar enlarged view of a portion of a coach with the invention in usable position and parts broken away.

Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a railway passenger coach having the window-casings 2 and the window-sashes 3 vertically movable therein to open and closed position, as is well understood in the art.

The window-sill of each casing 2 is provided in vertical register with the respective sash 3 with a slot a, which extends longitudinally of the sill from one end thereof and opens communication with the space between the inner and outer walls of the coachside. A pivot-rod 5 is fixed at its upper end to the lower edge portion of each windowsash 8 adjacent to one side edge thereof for raising and lowering movements therewith and extends therefrom down through the sillslot 4 and into the wall space of the coach, being preferably guided for movement at its lower end portion by a guide 6 Specification of Letters Patent.

The lowering movements of the guard-plate are limited, in the present in stance, by the hinge-lugs thereof, which receive the rod. 5, coacting with the respective rod-guides 6 and 7 The upper edge of each guard-plate is preferably provided with an upwardly projecting hand-hold portion 9, which, when the guard-plate is in lowered position, projects above the top of the window-sill and enters a registering bottom recess 10 in the window-sash.

l/Vhen the window-sash 3 has been raised a height which is slightly greater than the length of the associated guard-plate 8 the guard-plate can then be raised from within the wall chamber and sill-slot 4: and turned outward to operative position at the adjacent side of the window-casing. The guardplate is retained in such operative position by a catclrfinger 11, which projects from the lower portion of the window-casing and has a top-notch for receiving the lower edge of the guard-plate. When a guard-plate has been placed in holding engagement with the catch 11 the associated window-sash is then lowered into engagement with the top of the plate to cooperate with the catch-finger to retain the plate in operative position.

It is evident with my invention that when a guard-plate is disposed in inoperative position within the wall chamber and the associated window-sash is in closed position that the guard-plate is entirely out of view inasmuch as the top edge of the plate and the sill-slot 4: are entirely covered by the sash. It is also evident with my invention that a guard-plate is always at hand for use in connection with a window and the plate is not liable to become lost or misplaced.

I wish it understood that my invention is not limited to any specific construction, arrangement or form of the parts, as it is capable of numerous modifications without departing from the spirit of the claims.

Having thus described my invention, what operative position in said slot and, when the sash has been raised, to be taken from said slot and swung outward on said pivot-rod to operative position relative to the casing.

sash vertically movable in said casing, a rod projecting downward from the lower portion of said sash through said slot and into said chamber and movable with the sash, a guard-plate mounted on said rod for pivotal and longitudinal sliding movements relative thereto, said plate being movable into inoperative position in said slot and chamber and, after a raising of the sash, adapted to be raised within thecasing and then swung outward to operative position, and means for retaining the guard-plate in operative outwardly swung position.
