Description

G. H'. HOLCOMBE.
BURIAL VAULT. APPLICATION FILED 050.1. 1911.
1,267,225, Patented 11515121, 1918.
GEORGE H. HOLCOMBE, 0F LAMBERTVILLE, NEW JERSEY.
BURIAL-VAULT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 21, 1918.
Application led December 1, 1917. Serial No. 204,906.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE I-I. I-IoLooMn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lambertville, in the county of Hunterdon and State of New Jersey, have invented new and useful Improvements in Burial- Vaults, of which the following is a specification. I
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in burial vaults and the principal object of the invention is to provide a box having a groove in its marginal portion adapted to receive cement or like material and a cover having a ange adapted to enter said groove for sealing the parts together.
Another object of the invention is to provide the cover with an outer flange for inclosing the marginal portion of the box and adapted to receive and retain the cement forced from the groove by the inner flange or tongue.
Another object of the invention is to provide removable means on the box or body for guiding the cover or top into place thereon.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which is simple and durable in construction, reliable and ecient in operation and one which can be manufactured and placed upon the market at a minimum cost.
rIhe invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in thev accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure l is an elevation partially in section and showing the guiding standard in place.
Fig. 2 is a cross sectional view.
As shown in these drawings l indicates the box or receptacle which is preferably made of cement reinforced with steel rods as shown. The marginal portions of the box are provided with the .grooves 2 and I prefer to form the outer walls of said grooves by an outwardly Vprojecting flange Copies of this patent may be. obtained for ve cents each, by addressing the 3 so that the central lines of said grooves are in the same vertical plane as the outer walls of the receptacle. The top cover of the box is indicated at 4 and said cover is provided with a flange or tongue 5, and an outer tongue or flange 6, said flange forming a groove 7. The parts are so proportioned that when the cover is put in position the inner flange 5 will engage with the grooves 2 and the outer flange 6 will inclose the entire marginal part of the box. The top is provided with the staples 8 which are adapted to receive the usual straps for lowering the top into the grave. For guiding the top on to the box I provide the hinged buckles 9 on the box which are adapted to receive the standards 10 which are so formed as to engage with the top and direct it into proper position on the box. As shown each standard is provided with a curved recess l1 for engaging with the curved part of the outer liange 3 and with an inclined end portion 12 engaging with the outer wall ofthe box so that the standards diverge outwardly at their upper portions. The box or receptacle is lowered into position in the ordinary way and after the coffin is placed therein the top is lowered thereon, it being understood that the groove in the box is lled with cement or other suitable material. As the flange 5 enters the groove 2 it will force some of the cement therefrom and said cement will fill up the space between the outer flanges of the top and box, thus making a complete seal between the parts.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.
I desire it to be understood that I may make slight changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claim.
What I claim is z- A vault comprising a box having a groove in its upper edge, hinged buckles connected with the sides of the box, standards engaging said buckles, and having portions engaging with the box above and below said buckles, and a top guided into position on the box by said standards, and having a tongue for engaging the groove.
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature.
GEORGE I-I. I-IOLCOMBE.
