GHESLEY B. HOWARD, OF ATLANTA, GEORGIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN CHAIRS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 126,703, dated May 14, 1872.
Be it known that I, GHEsLnY B. HOWARD, of Atlanta, in the county of Fulton and State of Georgia, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Chairs; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawing is a representation of a transverse vertical section of my invention, and Fig. 2 is a view of the same.
This invention has relation to means for protecting chairs which are exposed to the weather; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of devices, whereby, when the occupant rises from the chair, the seat is thrown up against the back, and a roof or cover at the same time automatically raised over both back and seat, effectually protecting the same.
In the accompanying drawing, the letter A designates the frame of the chair. B represents the back thereof, which may be cushioned or upholstered in any desirable manner. 0 represents the seat hinged at the rear. This portion of the chair may'also be cushioned and finished comfortably without fear of the upholstering being damaged by exposure to the weather. D is a cover or roof usually made 7 concave and pivoted to the back of the chair or frame in such a manner that it may be V drawn over the upper part of the chair, or revolved back out of the way. E represents an arm connecting the rear portion of the revolving cap with the seat, said arm being usually pivoted to the latter in front of the hinge. This arm is so arranged that when the seat is pulled down into the horizontal position the cap will be pulled back or revolved out of the way. I
When the occupant rises from the seat it is designed to be closed up against the back of the chair. This is usually accomplished by means of a weight or spring, F, the latter being preferred, and illustrated in the drawing.
As the seat rises, by means of the connecting-arm E, the cover D is brought forward over the upper part of the chair, effectually protecting it in falling weather.
The same principle may be applied in the manufacture of garden-settees.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination, with the chair or settee frame, of the hinged seat spring or its equivalent, revhlving cap, and connecting-arm, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my namein the presence of two witnesses.
OHESLEY B. HOWARD.
Witnesses:
