Application filed April 14, 1917. Serial No. 162,155.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known thatI, ROBERT F. TIMMoNs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Coshocton, in the county of Coshocton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in License-Tags, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to license tags for automobiles, motorcycles and other vehicles upon which the law requires annual license fees to be paid and tags to be displayed indicating the payment of such fees and carrying permission to use the roads of a State. The primary object of the invention is to provide a license tag which may be used indenitely and which will be capable of receiving an insert indicating that the licenseV fee for the current yea-r has been paid. Other incidental objects will appear as the description of the same proceeds.
1n the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is an elevation of a license tag embodying my invention;
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section on the line 2-2`of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is an elevation of a portion of a tag showing a diiierent construction;
Fig. 4 is a transverse section on the line 1 -fief Fig. 3; i
Fig. 5 is a detail section on the line 5 5 of Fig. 3.
The license tag will consist of a plate 1 of metal or other durable material of the form and dimensions now generally employed. rIhis platewill be provided withopenings 2 at or near its corners for the reception of ,permanent fastening devices.
whereby it may be rigidly secured to the vehicle when the regulations require such permanent fastening. lt will also be pro vided at its upper edge ,with one or more slots 3 through which attaching straps nriay be passed-when the regulations of any particular State or other division of government permitsthe use of such means of applying the tag. Upon the face of the plate 1 will be displayed a number indicated at 4, which will be the registry number of the vehicle to which the tag is applied and it is the object of my invention to permit a vehicle to retain a certain number permanently so that the plate 1 need not be changed from year to year. Near one end of the main plate 1, I provide guides or ways 5 to re- -strap is used, will 4golng descrlption,
ceive an insert 6 upon which may be displayed, asl at 7, the number of the current license year and also letters or other indicia, as at 8, to denote the name of the State issuing the license. The insert 6 may be constructed with a longitudinal slot 9 corresponding in form and dimensions to the slot 3 in the plate 1 and so located as to register with one of said slots 3 when the insert is in position. Obviously, the attaching strap will then serve also to secure and prevent loss of the insert. The insert will also be provided with openings 20 adapted to register with openings 2 in the back plate so that when permanent -fastenings are employed the insert will be firmly secured by the same devices. The guides or ways 5 may conveniently be in the form of lips struck up from the main plate and bent over, as shown most clearly in Fig. 2, so as to provide spaces which may receive the edges of the insert and near the lower edge of the main plate similar lips 10 are struck up therefrom to be engaged by and form rests for the lower edge of the insert so that the insert Will be firmly supported and cutting or wearing strain upon the attaching strap, When such be avoided.
ln Figs. 3, 11 and 5, l have shown a form y of the invention in which the plate 11 corresponds in all respects to the plate -1 previously described.l Lips or guides 12 are struck up from this plate to receive and support the insert y,13 and right angular lips or sockets 141 are4 also struck up from the plate 11 to receive and extend over the lower corners of the insert so as to protect the same and revent the bending or breaking thereof. ear the upper edge of the plate 11, a stop 15 is struck up therefrom to engage the upper edge of the insertand thereby retain the same in place so that the attaching strap passed through the slot 16 in the plate 11 will not be subjected to Wear from the insert. It will be readily asA the insert will generally be formed of the stop or retaining lip 15 so as to clear the lsame and engage' below it.
be evident from the foretaken in connection with the accompanying drawings, that my invention rovides a license tag which may be used lndeinitely and upon which the dis- It is thought to understood that play surface maybe chan ed from year to year quickly and easily. he owner of the vehicle will thus be save d the expense of paying for a large tag every year and will also avoid the trouble and labor of attaching the same to a vehicle, whilev the governmental authority issuing the license will likewise be enabled to effect a considerable saving in the purchase of tags. The insert may be'slipped into place without removing the tag from the vehicle and inv order to dis-v tinguish the insert ofone year easily from the insert representing another year the face thereotmay be coated with different Acolors from year to yearso that even if the numeral indicatingthe 4current year should be obliterated the color of the insert would indicate for what year it was issued.
-1 Havin thus described the invention, what is claime as new is A license tag comprising a main plate', a supplemental plate designed for disposal against the face of the main plate, and means upon the main plate for supporting the supplemental plate against downward movement and for holding the same against lateral movement, the said plates having openings designed to register when the plates are assembled whereby to provide means for the passage of an element for attaching the tag to a vehicle and also for holding the supplemental plate against upward displacement.
In testimony whereof I aix my signature.
