Specification of Letters Patent. May 21, a
Application filed June 8, 1914; Serial naeaacas.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GoT'rwAL'r SIEBER, a subject of the German Emperor, residing at Plauen, in Vogtland, in the Kingdom of Saxony, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Driving Mechanism for Piercing Implements in Embroidering-Maehines, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to driving mechanism for implements, such as borers and stiipfels in embroidering machines, and has for its object to so construct and arrange the driving mechanism as to insure precise and uniform operation thereof.
Boring and stiipfeling implements are driven from shafts which are nearly as long as the machine itself (from 12 to 14: yds.) Hitherto the driving force has been applied to one of the ends of the shafts, but owing to the flexibility of the latter, torsional forces, the inertia of the moving masses and the rapid succession of movements the latter are irregular or vary at different points of the shaft, so that the borers and stiipfels remote from the driving force receive diflerent movements from those near the latter, and consequently the depth of penetration of the borers and stupfels will not be the same at all points of the shafts. When it is considered that the ordinary depth of penetration is only a small fraction of a decimeter, it will be appreciated that a difference of about 2 millimeters, which has been found to exist between the movement of the implements remote from the driving force and that of theimplements near the driving force cannot be ignored, the same being large enough to render the embroidery design faulty and unsatisfactory.
With my invention I obviate these drawbacks, as it will be understood by reference to the accompanying drawing in which similar reference characters denote corresponding parts and in which Figure 1 shows more or less diagrammatically an elevation of a part of an automatic embroidering machine involving my new mechanism and Fig. 2 is a side view thereof.
Referring to the drawing 1 denotes the stationary machine frame in which is retatively mounted the main driving shaft 2 carrying the cam 8 which is adapted to operate the piercing implements, such. as the borers l andthe stiipfels 5 shown in Fig; 2. This cam 3 is arranged, not as hitherto atone end of the machine, but within the latter; that is to say in the space formed between the two end walls of the machine and preferably in the middle. Engaging the cam groove of the disk 3 is the roller 6 carried by one arm of the bell crank lever 6, the other arm of which is formed to a loop 6 and which is fulcrumed to a bracket of the machine frame. A lever 7 is mounted on the inner end of a shaft 8 and is connected by a link 9 to a rod 10. The latter carries at one end a sliding block 11 engaging the loop 6 of the bell crank lever 6 and at its other end is connected to the bell crank lever 12 which operates one of the piercing implements, for instance the stiipfels 5 asshown,
In the present example the shaft 8 is assumed to be driven and controlled from the jacquard 13. In case of non-automatic machines the shaft 8 may be operated by a hand lever 14 as indicated by dotted lines at the left of Fig. 1.
By the rotation of the shaft 8 either through the control of the jacquard 13 or by the hand lever 1a the rod 10 through the medium of the link 9 will be adjusted so as to bring the block 11 in the loop 6 nearer to or farther from the fulcrum of the bell crank lever 6, whereby the piercing implements will be given shorter or longer strokes during the movement imparted to them from the cam 8 through the medium of the bell crank lever 6.
lVhat I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a jacquard embroidering machine, a jacquard apparatus, piercing implements, driven means for operating said implements direct and located midway between the end walls of said machine, a shaft directly controlled from said jacquard and means oper ated from said shaft to adjust the depth of penetration of said implements during the operation of said driven means.
2. In a jacquard embroidering machine, a jacquard apparatus, piercing implements, a driven cam arranged midway between the end walls to said machine, adjustable means operated from said cam, and serving for the adjustment of the depth of penetration of said implements, and a shaft directly controlled from said jacquard and operating said adjustable means.
' 3. In a jacquard embroidering machine, a jacquard apparatus, piercing implements, driven means for operating said implements and located midway between the end walls of said machine, a shaft directly controlled from said jacquard and means operated from said shaft and including a link for the adjustment of the depth of penetration of said implements during the operation of said driven means.
4:. In a jacquard embroidering machine, a jacquard apparatus, piercing implements, a driven cam located midway between the end walls of said machine, adjustable means operated positively from said cam for operating said implements, a shaft controlled from said jacquard and means operated from said shaft and including a link for the adjustment of said adjustable means, during the operation of said driven cam.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GOTTWALT SIEBER. Witnesses:
ROBERT H. BYMANN, ROBERT H. NEIR.
